The Truth About Generic Drugs, According To Dr. Kevin Coy

Many of us are abundantly aware that we face an ongoing health crisis in The United States and at the heart of the problem is the rising cost of drugs. We live in a free enterprise society and “Big Pharma” has a vested interest in maintaining drug prices so they see a return on their investment in research and development. Part of the high cost is the red tape and labor-intensive and time-consuming research that is required to bring a drug safely to the market. The life of a Branded drug is the 10 years from a patent being obtained until generic drugs can be manufactured and sold on the open market.

Our politicians many of whom have no medical background and are often on the “dole” of Pharma companies are making decisions for us and our health. Some have gone as far as to say “A blue pill is a blue pill”. I would question the validity of this statement as an actively practicing physician for over 30 years? Unfortunately, generic drug manufacturing plants are often outside of the US and quality control may be less than one would want. In the past year we have seen recall after recall of medications that are very important for the health and wellbeing of many patients.

Physicians are truly dedicated to improving the lives of the patients they care for but are frustrated with the quality or lack of quality of generic drugs on the market. So always ask your doctor if a generic drug is safe for the condition you have, try and find consistency in the source of your drug specifically where it is made. If you notice a change in your pill shape, size or color, ask your pharmacist to review and make sure the product is right for you. Most of all be an aware consumer. Buyer Beware!
