When you’re a celebrity, being perfectly-coiffed is part of the job—and it certainly helps when you have a stylist on speed-dial. But Hollywood’s leading ladies (and lads) won’t settle for just any stylist, and with their work showcased in magazines, on the red carpet and strutting down catwalks, their go-to experts are celebrities in and of themselves.
The hairstylist: Oribe
The celebrity clients: Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Naomi Campbell
You know someone’s a big deal when they’re known by one name—and one name only. In the world of hair, that person is Oribe. A “mane” man in the business since the 1980s, his representation of then-up-and-comers like Laura Mercier, Bobbi Brown and Francois Nars spawned a new generation of beauty trailblazers before he went on to open his own salon in New York City in 1991. Oribe finally launched his signature hair care line in 2008 (skincare and makeup have followed since), and his Dry Texturizing Spray has become a cult classic. And that scent… Divine.
The hairstylist: Serge Normant
The celebrity clients: Julia Roberts, Reese Witherspoon, Julianne Moore, Sarah Jessica Parker
Television, movies, magazine covers, fashion shows… Serge Normant does it all—and does it for all of the biggest names in Hollywood (including Julia Roberts on the current cover of InStyle). He arrived in New York in 1988 after honing his skills with legendary Parisian stylist Jacques Dessange—and waited nearly 20 years before opening his own salon, which now has two locations in the Big Apple. An eponymous range of products was naturally part of his evolution, and the award-winning collection spans shampoos and conditioners to styling aids and even a perfume.
The hairstylist: Frederic Fekkai
The celebrity clients: Charlize Theron, Uma Thurman, Salma Hayak, Scarlett Johansson
Frederic Fekkai was amongst the first stylists who used their name to build a brand, and in Fekkai’s case this means multiple salons around the world and multiple product lines. Born in the south of France, he arrived in New York in 1979, and could be considered the coiffeur responsible for the term, “celebrity stylist.” Today, he has two product lines, Fekkai Classic and the newly launched The One, in addition to a collection of luxury bath and home products called Bastide.
The hairstylist: Jen Atkin
The celebrity clients: Chrissy Teigen, Kendall Jenner, Karlie Kloss, Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid
The Kardashian effect is real… Just ask stylist Jen Atkin, who rose to fame working with the clan. But with more than 1.5 million followers on social media, Atkin represents a new generation of celebrity stylists who have a platform to share their work (and their lives) with the masses. A line of products in another way to solidify your standing as an influencer, so she launched Ouai Haircare last year. As thoroughly modern as Atkin herself, this collection features innovative products such as dry shampoo foam and an amped-up detangling spray—and a limited-edition fragrance set is on the way.
The hairstylist: Sam McKnight
The celebrity clients: Kate Moss, Kristen Stewart, Lily Rose Depp, Sienna Miller
Unless you’re an Anglophile who’s really into hair, you may not have heard of Sam McKnight despite the fact that he has four decades of experience working with scores of models, celebrities, fashion designers and magazines. He’s the man behind Princess Diana’s iconic short, slicked-back ‘do and he’s been responsible for Kate Moss’ cool-girl coif for years—and his new collection of products, Hair by Sam McKnight, includes a spray that strives to deliver her effortless look in just a spritz or two.
