It’s International Gin & Tonic Day! These 10 NYC G&Ts Are Absolute Musts

For International Gin & Tonic Day today, 10 must-try G&Ts in New York, all diverse, all absolutely delicious.

The gin and tonic deserves a little more attention. While martinis have become increasingly elaborate and ordering a Negroni can involve choosing among half a dozen interpretations, the G&T has quietly remained one of the most satisfying drinks on the menu, and International Gin & Tonic Day on October 19 is as good an excuse as any to give it its due. New York’s best versions run from Katana Kitten’s Shiso Gin & Tonic and The Whitby’s Earl Grey–laced G & Tea to Dante’s Champagne-topped take, El Quijote’s olive-forward riff, José Andrés’s Ultimate G&T at Mercado Little Spain and a sotol-spiked Fresca Tonic at Superbueno, No. 9 on North America’s 50 Best Bars. (I’d argue that last one alone is worth the trip to the East Village.)

Its apparent simplicity is exactly what makes the G&T so revealing. The gin, the tonic, the ice and the garnish all have somewhere to shine and very little room to hide. Elsewhere on this list, bartenders bring in savory olive notes, Champagne and carefully chosen botanicals, while dedicated gin programs turn the selection itself into part of the evening.

From a tray service built around discovering your next favorite bottle to a highball worth crossing downtown for, these are the New York bars putting the G&T front and center.

The Ivory Peacock

38 West 26th Street, NoMad

The Ivory Peacock is a NoMad restaurant and gin bar with one of Manhattan’s largest gin collections, and its back room, the Emerald Bar, serves a signature Gin & Tonic Tray Service. Choosing the gin is half the entertainment: the tray gives the drink the kind of attention usually reserved for a tableside martini, drawing on bottles from around the world.

It’s an appealing proposition for devoted gin drinkers and for anyone still figuring out what they like. Rather than defaulting to the label you recognize, ask about botanicals, styles and the tonic that comes with them. The service makes room for that conversation, and turns a familiar order into something much more personal.

Katana Kitten

531 Hudson Street, West Village

Katana Kitten is Masahiro Urushido’s Japanese-American highball bar in the West Village, and its signature Shiso Gin & Tonic combines Fords gin, shiso, lime and tonic in a build that gives each ingredient a clear purpose. The shiso brings a fresh herbal dimension; the lime keeps the drink firmly in familiar territory. There are plenty of reasons to spend an evening here (we’ve made the case before, in our guide to the best Japanese cocktail bars in NYC), but this is an excellent place to start.

It also makes a persuasive case for restraint. One thoughtful addition can change the character of a classic without making it unrecognizable, and this is precisely the kind of drink that earns a permanent spot in your ordering repertoire. If your usual G&T has become a reflex, consider this your reason to pay attention again.

The order: Shiso Gin & Tonic.

The Whitby Bar

The Whitby Hotel, 18 West 56th Street, Midtown

The Whitby Bar is the lobby bar of Firmdale’s The Whitby Hotel, and its Whitby G & Tea combines Earl Grey, Nolet’s Silver gin, white peony tonic, lemongrass and lime. For a cocktail so closely tied to British drinking culture, a little tea feels entirely appropriate: it gives the familiar framework a fragrant backbone, with citrus and lemongrass adding another aromatic layer.

The setting seals it. Anchored by a substantial pewter-topped bar and filled with art and handcrafted details, the room has the personality to turn an afternoon drink into a much longer visit. This is the entry for anyone who likes their G&T with a beautiful room and a distinctly British point of view. (Afternoon tea, but make it a cocktail. Very civilized.)

The order: Whitby G & Tea.

Superbueno
Superbueno

Superbueno

13 First Avenue, East Village

Superbueno is Ignacio “Nacho” Jimenez’s Mexican-American cocktail bar in the East Village, ranked No. 9 on North America’s 50 Best Bars 2026, and its Fresca Tonic pairs gin with sotol, pomegranate-fig tonic and sour apple agua fresca. It’s one of the more adventurous interpretations on this list, pushing the drink’s fruit and botanical possibilities well past lime and a prayer.

The cocktail suits a bar whose personality comes through in everything it pours. Superbueno treats familiar formats as an invitation to explore Mexican flavors, and the Fresca Tonic is a particularly compelling way in for G&T loyalists. Go early. The secret got out a while ago.

The order: Fresca Tonic.

Dante

79–81 MacDougal Street, Greenwich Village

Dante is the Greenwich Village aperitivo institution best known for its Negronis, and its published gin and tonic combines Bombay Sapphire with mastiha, white port, a pinch of salt, Fever-Tree Mediterranean tonic and Champagne. Leave it to Dante to give a G&T an aperitivo sensibility, and a splash of bubbles.

There’s more going on here than the name lets on. Mastiha adds another botanical layer, while white port and Champagne nudge the drink into leisurely, celebratory territory. At a bar so devoted to the pleasures of an unhurried drink, it’s a fitting alternative to the Negroni that probably brought you through the door. (Order both. Nobody’s counting.)

The order: Gin & Tonic.

El Quijote

Hotel Chelsea, 226 West 23rd Street, Chelsea

El Quijote is the storied Spanish restaurant at the Hotel Chelsea, and its Quijote G+T brings together Spanish gin, pear, aloe, celery and Mediterranean tonic, introducing fruit and vegetal notes into the same glass. In a city where the Spanish G&T has long been treated as a ritual, the setting could hardly be more fitting.

There’s also a second option for anyone drawn to the savory side of the menu. The Olive Tonic combines olive vermouth, olive leaf gin, manzanilla sherry and tonic, a particularly intriguing order for anyone whose heart usually belongs to a dirty martini. Between the two, El Quijote makes a strong case for building the whole visit around the G&T.

The order: Quijote G+T, or Olive Tonic for a savory variation.

Bathtub Gin

132 Ninth Avenue, Chelsea

Bathtub Gin is the Chelsea speakeasy hidden behind a coffee-shop front, and it gives the G&T an entire menu, pairing different gins with flavored tonics and garnishes. The Brooklyn Gin version comes with pineapple and peppercorn tonic, pineapple and cilantro; No. 3 Gin gets house-made tonic, grapefruit and candied ginger; and Manly Citrus Gin meets berry and thyme tonic with kiwi and eucalyptus.

It’s a useful lesson in how dramatically the supporting cast can change the drink. Brand loyalty matters less here than deciding whether the evening calls for something tropical, citrus-driven or herbal. (For more hidden doors, see our guide to NYC’s best speakeasies.)

The order: Brooklyn Gin with pineapple and peppercorn tonic, or No. 3 Gin with grapefruit and candied ginger.

The Portrait Bar

The Fifth Avenue Hotel, 1 West 28th Street, NoMad

The Portrait Bar is the gallery-like bar at The Fifth Avenue Hotel, and its Oyster Bay Branch takes the G&T toward the coast. Created for the bar’s Long Island Rail Road–inspired summer menu, it combines Fear City Gin, Chartreuse Elixir Végétal, Mediterranean tonic and sea bean for an herbal, maritime direction.

It’s a fitting interpretation for a bar that draws inspiration from places and journeys: the coastal references give it a specific sense of destination, while the G&T foundation keeps it approachable. As a seasonal drink, it’s one to ask about before making a dedicated trip.

The order: Oyster Bay Branch, subject to seasonal availability.

Eleven bars, eleven arguments for a drink most of us stopped thinking about years ago. Happy International Gin & Tonic Day. Pace yourself.

Mercado Little Spain

10 Hudson Yards, Hudson Yards

Mercado Little Spain is José Andrés’s Spanish food hall at Hudson Yards, and its Ultimate G&T pairs Hendrick’s gin with Fever-Tree Indian tonic. José Andrés’s approach begins with the Spanish appreciation for taking the drink seriously, and the foundation is deliberately recognizable within a destination devoted to the pleasures of Spanish eating and drinking.

The venue’s published recipe adds juniper berries, lime, lemon peel and lemon verbena, proof of how much fragrance can contribute before the first sip. It’s an easy choice for anyone who wants to revisit the classic through the Spanish lens that made its botanicals and presentation such a focus in the first place.

The order: Ultimate G&T.

Mace

35 West 8th Street, Greenwich Village

Mace is Nico de Soto and Greg Boehm’s spice-driven cocktail bar in Greenwich Village, whose current menu builds each signature drink around a single spice. Its menu also makes room for the classics, including a Gin + Tonic, which makes it a useful stop for drinkers who appreciate an ambitious bar but want to order something familiar.

The move is to ask the team about the current gin and tonic pairing before settling in. The menu lists the drink without a detailed build, leaving that conversation to the bar. In a guide full of highly specific interpretations, there’s room for a classic shaped by the people making it.

The order: Gin + Tonic; ask about the current pairing.
