An Essential Guide To Off-Strip Las Vegas Eateries

City Guide, Haute Cuisine | August 27, 2024

In Las Vegas, The Strip is known for its glitz and its glamour, which is why off-Strip eateries sometimes get overlooked. But it would be a mistake to do so — because some of the best meals in Las Vegas are (to visitors, at least) in the least likely places.

Ada’s Food + Wine

Located in Tivoli Village, courtesy of James Beard Finalist chef James Trees & LEV Group, Ada’s Food + Wine offers wines of the world, chosen for their intrigue, value, and delight by accomplished sommeliers. Chef de cuisine Jackson Stamper offers shareable plates and seasonally inspired cuisine to accompany the delicate menu of New American favorites. It’s an ambient eatery, to be sure, great for date nights, with fantastic food and — of course — wine. Try the mussels, made with coconut, yellow chile, ginger, cilantro, and onion, and the tagliatelle, made with braised rabbit, paprikash, and parmigiano reggiano.

Herbs & Rye

No one makes it onto North America’s 50 Best Bars list without reason. Herbs & Rye (the only contender in Las Vegas, might I mention) did so for its cocktails — perfectly prepared takes on classic cocktails — but it’s culinary menu is just as on point. It’s a steak-heavy restaurant, but there’s just about everything you can imagine on the menu, from pastas and flatbreads to risotto, pan-seared salmon, and the standout pork and figs.

Marché Bacchus

There’s truly no more beautiful place to dine than Marché Bacchus, a French/Mediterranean restaurant located directly on Lake Jacqueline in the Desert Shores community near Summerlin. Turtles and swans are visible during the daylight hours, though twinkling lights set the scene for supreme ambience in the evening hours. Steak and seafood vie for dominance here. Try the Escargot Persillade, made with white wine-braised Burgundy snails, garlic butter, and toasted garlic bread crumbs, and pair with a glass of something exquisite. There’s also a wine shop on site for an added bonus.

 Harlo Steakhouse & Bar

Despite having amazing food, there aren’t many places off-Strip that have the same kind of sultry vibe as its on-Strip brethren, but Harlo Steakhouse & Bar is that place. The eatery, located in downtown Summerlin, has an elevated bar scene, and tends to be where you’ll find a good-looking crowd of locals on any given night. Restaurateur Jeffrey Fine and chef/partner Gina Marinelli offer guests  a curated menu spotlighting a unique beef program and superior steaks, as well as traditional steakhouse sides, signature baked pastas, caviar service, and more. The drink menu carefully considers all layers of flavors, textures, aromatics, visuals and aesthetics, in addition to a wine list of 400 selections.

From chef James Trees, known for the Arts District’s beloved Esther’s Kitchen, in partnership with the LEV Group, Al Solito Posto (“The Usual Place”) blends classic Italian recipes such as rigatoni alla vodka and eggplant parm with contemporary energy, for sophisticated but inviting dining and drinking. The venue, located in Tivoli Village, has oodles of charm, and a focus on east coast Italian cuisine. Nonna’s meatballs are a surefire hit, as is the innovative tuna tartare cannoli — cucumber, avocado, chive, and lemon. Make sure to save room for dessert, because the tiramisu cheesecake is to die for.

Lotus of Siam

Lotus of Siam, located at Red Rock Casino & Resort, Lotus is a 280-seat restaurant that features an abundance of greenery and natural bamboo elements, native Thai red wood, more than 230 hanging rice paper and bamboo lanterns, hand-placed brick, and fabrics brought in directly from Thailand markets. Its earthy and comfortable ambiance extends into a garden atrium with wrought iron windows and Las Vegas’ first retractable roof spanning an impressive 60-foot ceiling, allowing natural sunlight to flow in. The roof is constructed of corrugated steel spotted with rust to represent the working class in Thailand, whose homes are often made of the material and rusts due to the humidity. A third dining room features a 40-foot high wall filled with 80 decorative vessels, symbolic of the packs tea harvesters in Thailand wear on their backs. Protective statues and sculptures stand guard throughout the venue, with a peaceful Zen garden located outside, overgrown with lush greenery and a reflecting pond showcasing bronze lotus fountains. Elements representing lucky Thai traditions are implemented throughout, including the south-facing entryway with rounded arches to allow feng shui to easily flow and create good fortune. That extends to the menu, an elevated take on traditional Thai cuisine, with a cocktail menu to match. Signature dishes include garlic prawns sauteed with special garlic sauce, topped with ground black pepper and Khao Soi, crispy duck served on a bed of egg noodles in a curry base sauce, garnished with sliced red onions, lime and pickles vegetables. Don’t miss the Tom Yum-Mi cocktail, made with lemongrass infused tequila, ginger liqueur, jalapeño liqueur, simple syrup, and Thai spices.

Naxos Taverna

Naxos Taverna, located at Red Rock Resort & Casino, is giving Greece vibes, and that’s because it’s inspired by the taverns of, well, Greece. Naxos pays homage to the southeastern Greek island of the same name that was heralded in ancient times as the isle of Dionysus, the god of wine and celebration. Here, the fare is elevated but approachable, with a seafood focus. We’re obsessed with the Kataifi wrapped prawns, served with a kalamata olive aioli, and the warm, heavenly pita bread accompanied by dips such as tzatziki, muhammara, hummos, coal-roasted eggplant & tomato, and beet-citrus tartar. If you’re in the mood for something lighter, head to the oyster bar located at the entrance to the restaurant.

Park on Fremont

Fremont Street can sometimes feel like madness, but Park on Fremont, a whimsical spot at the entrance to Old Vegas, is a calming antidote to the chaos. This is a whimsical spot with a light menu, but fantastic cocktails. The Alice in Wonderland feel is due to some large format paintings, adorable decor, and (strangely) taxidermy, but here, it works. Order the Flower Garden, made with Casamigos tequila, mint, peach, ginger, and an edible flower.

Honey Salt

Restaurateurs Elizabeth Blau and Kim Canteenwalla are the visionaries behind Honey Salt, a go-to spot for pretty much everything culinary in Summerlin. The restaurant, which opened in 2012, is pretty special, paying homage to Las Vegas itself in that it specializes in produce and meats from local and regional farmers, fishermen, and growers. The menus are chef-driven, seasonal, and built around a core of comfort food staples and a fabulous vegan menu. Items such as shrimp scampi linguine — made with garlic, Calabrian chili, savoy spinach, white wine, and lemon oven roasted tomatoes — and the indulgent Farmhouse Meatloaf (bacon-wrapped, with caramelized onions, tomato jam broccolini, and mashed potatoes) are perfectly pleasing on the palette, and a great accompaniment to the playful cocktail and American-centric wine list.

Piero’s Italian Cuisine

Piero’s Italian Cuisine, founded in 1982 by Freddie Glusman, has remained a treasured Las Vegas institution for more than four decades, where celebrities and public figures gather for great food and company. Located directly off the Las Vegas Strip adjacent to the Convention Center, the stand-alone restaurant is one of Las Vegas’ longest-running, family-owned and operated Italian restaurants. Highlights at this eatery, which has an Old World Little Italy feel (and if you don’t recognize it as one of the locations of the 1995 film, Casino, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro, take a closer look!) include osso buco, which has been on the menu since 1982; Pat’s meatballs, served with whipped ricotta, gravy and basil; a grilled 16-ounce veal chop, prepared with olive oil and roasted garlic; and Chilean sea bass, served with baby spinach and puttanesca sauce. It also features one of the largest collections of vintage and rare wines in Las Vegas.

Echo & Rig

Echo & Rig Steakhouse and Butcher Shop, located in Summerlin’s Tivoli Village, reimagines the classic steakhouse through a new, modern and delightful lens. The restaurant, which is helmed by chef Sam Marvin — the former owner of LA’s Bottega Louie who competed on the Food Network’s cooking competition, Beat Bobby Flay — goes around the globe to find its premiere cuts, from Tasmania to Colorado. It’s a hybrid restaurant and butcher shop experience that transforms the steakhouse and reimagines it with a robust menu of over 90 items. The restaurant’s mixology program is also pretty stellar, offering guests creative and fresh ingredient-based cocktails such as the Hot Mess, made with blanco tequila, elderflower agave, lemon, and cucumber tabasco.
