New Warriors Stadium To Open With Metallica & Symphony Concert

This fall the Golden State Warriors, the award-winning basketball team, helmed by Steph Curry, Steve Kerr, and Co., are officially moving from Oakland to San Francisco. Chase Center, an 18,064 seat sports stadium, will be the Warriors new home base in Mission Bay. The privately financed arena will host the NBA champions’ home games and   200 other events per year including cultural events, family shows, and concerts.

Chase Center has just announced their debut production: a joint performance of Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony (SFS) on Friday, September 6. This isn’t the first time that the odd pair have held a joint concert—20 years ago Metallica and SFS did a show at Berkeley Community Theater. The event was dubbed S&M, and the recorded album of the duo’s version of The Call of Ktulu won a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Michael Tilson Thomas will lead the orchestra for S&M2.

“It’s a natural fit for the Chase Center, the home of the Warriors and a new hub of community pride, to open with a joint concert by two influential voices of the Bay Area musical scene, Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony,” said SFS’s CEO Mark C. Hanson in a statement. “We look forward to joining with our friends the Golden State Warriors to put on a not to be missed show of extraordinary Bay Area talent, celebrating both the opening of this important new civic landmark and the opening of the Symphony’s 25th season under the leadership of Michael Tilson Thomas.”

Everyone is excited about the musical event. Adds the Warriors president and COO, Rick Welts, “Bringing together Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony 20 years later for our first event at Chase Center is going to be an incredible and unique performance for the Bay Area. This announcement is one of many of the must-see acts we’ll have as we continue to add a variety and diversity of shows to Chase Center’s calendar.”

Other acts that San Franciscans can look forward to? The Dave Matthews Band on September 10, Phil Collins on October 17, The Black Keys on November 20, The Chainsmokers on November 29, and Andrea Bocelli with the SFS on December 5. Tickets for these events go on sale at different dates; S&M2 tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m.
