LA’s Top 7 Sanctuaries for Pampering the Gentlemen
Real men may get manicures, but the key is knowing which spots offer truly luxe pampering experiences.
John Allan’s Premier Men’s Grooming Club
John Allan’s is where real men go for a bit of grooming. Exclusivity is rule #1, where a $950 membership fee grants access to a private lounge within Saks Fifth Avenue, which features a bar, billiards and more. A full-service men’s salon is, of course, a major draw as well, where members can enjoy everything from beard trims and hair cuts to sports pedicures and facial massage.
9634 Wilshire Blvd. Beverly Hills; (310) 887-5500
The classic barber shop gets a cool, California makeover at Baxter Finley. Hot towel service and plenty of personal attention are a given, whether you’re sitting down for a hair cut or straight razor shave. Baxter Finley also keeps clients looking sharp well past their appointments, thanks in part to the fantastic line of products sold in store, including their own Baxter of California, Marvis, Etat Libre d’Orange, Juniper Ridge, Couto and more.
515 N. La Cienega Blvd. West Hollywood; (310) 657-4726
Billed as a “full service style destination,” the Green Room offers gents a relaxing escape from their daily routines. Located within Salon Republic, stylist Dorie Spiegel of the Green Room offers traditional and short haircuts, contemporary hairstyles, color treatments, facial hair grooming and waxing (not to mention complimentary drinks).
9911 Pico Blvd. Suite #3, Los Angeles; (310) 948-7700
Disproving that men don’t care about nail upkeep, Hammer & Nails brings the masculine into manicures at its signature Melrose Avenue shop. There are no manicure tables or pedicure spa chairs here. Instead, Hammer & Nails goes for the luxury man cave vibe with oversized leather chairs, dark woods and dim lighting. Televisions, music and complimentary drinks also provided plenty of distraction.
8257 Melrose Ave. Los Angeles; (323) 651-1458
Stark Waxing Studio has been meeting the hair removal needs of many an Angeleno was some time now, with the West Hollywood location inside Face Place a particular favorite. After all, what could be better than easing the possible pain of waxing than with a Face Place signature facial? Though at Stark, painless treatments are the specialty. The high quality imported wax is formulated for sensitive skin types, and Stark’s post-treatment oils help soothe and cool.
8701 Santa Monica Blvd. West Hollywood; (310) 855-1150
Back in the day, the barber shop was a working man’s sanctuary, where power players could talk shop and always get a great shave. Felix Omar’s continues to evoke that nostalgia today—albeit with some modern amenities and some well-deserved fan following. The Studio City grooming studio is a well-cherished secret around town, where executives and Hollywood elite clamor for some chair time with Omar himself. Haircuts and color are also offered at Fexlix Omar’s, but the straight-razor shave will always rule supreme.
11239 Ventura Blvd. Suite #212, Studio City; (818) 980-3429
No little shop of horrors here. Sweeney Todd’s is just a good ole’ old-school barber shop, where the aesthetics may be vintage but the hair styling is certainly up to date. (As is the reservation system—online only!) With a barber staff that is known for delivering some of the best straight-razor shaves in town, Sweeney Todd’s should be on the top of any man’s list looking for a close, clean shave in a cool atmosphere.
