10 Questions With Fashion Icon Betsey Johnson, The Queen of Pink Punk

Designer Betsey Johnson, fashion’s residing queen of pink punk, comes to San Francisco on Feb. 28 for a meet-and-greet at Macy’s Union Square, hosted by blogger and TV personality Micah Jesse from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Praised for her spunky personality and ability to remain true to her uniquely playful vision, Johnson has been a household name in the fashion industry for more than 30 years, designing everything from handbags and luggage to eyewear and household goods. Fashion fanatics won’t want to miss out on this VIP opportunity to come see Johnson debut her newest designs, receive a complimentary tote bag and pose for a photo with the fabulous fashion icon.

To get you ready for Johnson’s appearance, Haute Living asked the fashion icon about her design inclinations and what San Francisco style means to her.

HL: Growing up, who or what were your style inspirations?
BJ: My dancing school teacher, my cheerleading costumes, Marlon Brando, Gidget, Tina Turner and Twiggy.

HL: When in San Francisco, where are your favorite places to shop? To eat?
BJ: The vintage clothing stores. I can’t remember specific places to eat, it’s been a long time since I’ve been to San Fran!

HL: How would you define SF style?
BJ: The “Haight Hippie” and the comfy relaxed “Ghirardelli style.”

HL: What trends are you gravitating towards for 2015?
BJ: Comfy, cool, flat “non-fashion” for my “me time” and then sexy, pretty n’ punk stuff for work.

HL: What is one trend you would like to see left behind in 2015?
BJ: The color block brigade.

HL: Which city in the world do you think has the best personal style and why?
BJ: NYC because it’s everybody’s style!

HL: How has your taste evolved over your career?
BJ: It has become more expensive. I definitely like to indulge more.

HL: What is your favorite SF neighborhood and why?
BJ: I remember living outside the Gates in San Quentin in 1969. It was near a farm with a pretty river view.

HL: Do you prefer leopard print or studs?
BJ: Leopard! Studs can be replaced by diamonds!

HL: What can we expect to see in your new collection?
BJ: My new Betsey bedding and stationery! All very iconic Betsey pieces at great prices.
