The Best Ice Cream in NYC: The Winter Treats You Need Right Now

News | November 21, 2014

It may be cold outside, but that doesn’t mean our craving for frozen treats has subsided one bit. These five eateries are dishing out the newest and coolest in ice cream, snow cream, and everything in-between. From key lime flavors to red velvet twinkie sundaes, Haute Living has rounded up the ice cream shops you need to visit before snow hits the ground.

Hay Rosie Craft Ice Cream Co.
Cobble Hill
204 Sackett Street
Brooklyn, NY
(347)987-4983

Hay Rosie brings your dreams to life with their barnburner, pictured above.  A barnburner is basically two pieces of homemade cookie dough (yes, raw cookie dough), with your choice of ice cream stuffed in between. It’s then warmed up under a panini-like presser. There is even a gluten-free version. But, the fun doesn’t end there. Hay Rosie serves up a ton of imaginative flavors that they change seasonally. Some of the ones currently offered are lemon bar, brownie brickle crunch, and sage chocolate chip.

Snowdays Shavery
East Village
241 E. 10 Street
New York, NY 10003
212.982.888

Snowdays is a game changer in the frozen dessert scene. Owner Tony Quach has taken shaved ice to the next level. The first of its kind in NYC, Snowdays pairs shaved ice with ice cream to create snow cream. Make your own, or you can choose from their pre-made combos such as the Made in Taiwan- green tea matcha snow cream with grass jelly and mochi toppings, finished off with a condensed milk drizzle.

Big Gay Ice Cream
East Village
125 E 7 Street
New York NY 10009
212.533.9333

Big Gay has been around for a short while now and you’ll be lucky to get in there without a wait. With ingenious ice cream combinations and even better names, there is plenty to try at this small eatery. The mermaid featured above, consists of vanilla ice cream, key lime curd, crushed graham crackers, and whipped cream. The salty pimp consists of vanilla ice cream in a cone with dulce de leche drizzle, a sprinkle of sea salt, and a chocolate dip turned hardened chocolate shell.

Ample Hills Creamery
Prospect Heights
623 Vanderbilt Ave.
Brooklyn, NY 11238
(347) 240 – 3926

Ample Hills prides itself on building a community gathering spot with creative flavors for the whole family to enjoy, such as its snap mallow pop. It’s a deconstructed rice krispie treat made with marshmallow ice cream and buttery Rice Krispie clusters. All ice cream is made in-store from start to finish using fresh and local ingredients such as eggs from hormone-free, grass-fed, cows and chickens. Natural and delicious!
Carroll Gardens
513 Henry Street
Brooklyn, NY 11231
(718) 522-6260

The Brooklyn Farmacy and Soda Fountain couldn’t be more charming. A 1920s apothecary store turned modern day soda fountain, this Carroll Gardens gem doles out classic sundaes with modern day flavor twists. The red velvet twinkie split comes with chocolate, vanilla, and coffee ice cream between two soft red velvet twinkies, complete with whipped cream and a cherry on top. To really tie together the old-school vibe, the soda fountain hosts a ” Friday Night with my Baby” jam chalk full of live music and dancing for the whole family.
