Pop-Abstract Artist Mary Heilmann on Display in London

Each one of Mary Heilmann’s pieces, in her exhibit “Visions, Waves and Roads,” tells a story from the contemporary abstract artists life.  Whether its “Road Trip” which reflects the feeling of her long cross country car rides or the nostalgic ode to her surfer days in California, the pink, violet and red “Ocean Side Sunset.”

Born in 1940’s San Francisco, Heilmann attended Berklee in 1960 and quickly developed la vie de Boheme; of her influences she includes the Beat poets Allen Ginnsberg and the pop artist Andy Warhol.  An avid surfer, you can see the flowing and almost carefree style Heilmann brushes on in her paintings, ceramics and furniture.

Layered with jazzy colors, Heilmann’s paintings evoke emotion in veteran art aficionado’s as well as first timers.

The “Visions, Waves and Roads” exhibit opens on Feb. 23 through April 5 at Hauser & Wirth London.  Along with a large new group of paintings, the exhibit also features Heilmann’s work on furniture and ceramics.
