New And Natural Ice Cream Shops Popping Up In New York
According to Metromix, some new ice cream spots have studded New York to cool your jets, with many of them embracing an organic, chemical-free disposition. From fro-yo to creamy gelato, there seems to be a frozen treat for every taste bud.
Our first stop is Coolhaus, a food truck specializing in gourmet ice cream sandwiches. Originally based in L.A., the epicurean goodies have a truck stationed in NYC for the summer. Try their version of mint ice cream, the Mintimalism, which includes organic mint leaf infused ice cream sandwiched between chocolate chip cookies. No need to trash the wrapper once the sammie is gobbled whole, because the calorie-free, all-natural sheath is edible as well.
The truck is located along The Highline, at 30th Street and 10th Avenue, all summer on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
The fro-yo phenomenon is in full swing, but Victory Garden is taking the concept down a different path, a route with an abundance of goat. Owner Sophia Brittan uses everything local in her goat-milk soft-serve emporium, deviating from toppings like rainbow-sprinkles and gummy bears to healthier options like strawberries and stewed rhubarb. She especially endorses the yogurt flavored with mastic- that’s tree resin!

Author turned ice cream scientist Brian Smith has concocted some extraordinary flavors in his Prospect Heights shop, Ample Hills Creamery; from his banana-infused Chocolate Monkey to The Otis Stout, made with local brewed Sixpoint Beer. With everything made from scratch, and the ingredients local and organic, including his beet-juice food coloring, Smith clearly has an intent to keep it au natural. He showed his spirited side with flavor A Lovely Day, in honor of the recently passed gay-marriage bill, which consisted of rainbow cookies engulfed in white chocolate ice cream.

Stop by Imperial Woodpecker Sno-balls for a majestic treat: New Orleans style balls of ice. Owner Nessa Peterson has brought a remnant from her southern childhood to The Big Apple, and with summer flavors like Wild Strawberry, Dreamsicle, and Tangerine, the creamy ice will go a long way in the blistering heat of city.
145 Seventh Ave. South at Charles St. 251-366-7777
With it’s new location finally gracing the streets of Brooklyn, residents of the borough can now indulge in the homemade goodness of Momofuku Milk Bar. Devour their Cereal Milk- legendary soft serve made with toasted cornflakes steeped in milk and sprinkled with sugar, salt, and corn, or pick up some strawberry lemon cake truffles and blueberry & cream cookies made on site!

The smooth, creamy texture of Italian gelato. There’s nothing quite like it, and what better a place to grab a scoop than Little Italy, New York? A native of Carpi, Italy himself, La Cremeria owner Martino Caciagli has most of his ingredients imported from the homeland, giving his delicacies an authentic taste. He even houses flavors for the lactose intolerant- the fico sorbetto, dairy-free and littered with fig fruit.
And for a more luxe feel, visit Amorino, the Paris-born gelato shop that has recently made its way to NYC. Flavors span titles like Belgian cinnamon biscuit, Italian hazelnut, and Indian Alphonso mango; even the staple lemon flavor is made with ingredients transported from Naples, owner Fillippo Saccani destined for his shop to stand out among the rest.
