When Ambre Dahan founded the brand, she was at one of the darkest times in her life. Today, she has a successful brand that is all about harnessing and sharing the power of women, motherhood, and community.
Here’s how Ambre did it.
Haute Living: What was the inspiration behind SPRWMN?
Ambre Dahan: I started SPRWMN during a time of big change in my life—the loss of my marriage and the loss of a business I worked so hard to build (Joe’s Jeans). I was in the middle of a reinvention and navigating my new life on my own with my kids.
It’s something women do all the time—carry the weight of everything on their shoulders, rebuild and start over. That’s how the name came to be—SPRWMN—Superwomen, women doing it all, effortlessly. My background is design and entrepreneurship, so I thought about what a woman needs in her wardrobe to feel strong and look her best.
Around this time I found a plonge leather and it really inspired the start of the brand. I approached it in the same way I was working with denim- perfectly designed for an impeccable fit, comfortable, but also luxury. Styles that could be worn anywhere, in any city, made from the highest quality fabrics. From those early days starting with leather we have expanded to now being an entire wardrobe brand: denim, cashmere, lounge, silk, etc.
HL: What is your background?
AD: I’m born and raised in Paris, and attended both business school and law school. After taking the bar exam In Paris was when I first met Joe Dahan, who would eventually become my husband and business partner. I moved to New York for an internship at Cartier, and while living in NYC I met Joe again, who was now at the forefront of the denim industry with his brand Joe’s Jeans.
I moved to LA, we got married and I became the design director at Joe’s. I helped grow the business in so many different aspects: I designed the women’s collection, created the kids division, and really learned the business inside and out and what it takes to create a successful brand.
HL: What is at the core of the brand?
AD: Women are really at the core of the brand, and how I design the collection. I really think about a full wardrobe: leather, denim, cashmere, loungewear, outerwear and accessories. I respond to how women want to dress and what we need to look good and feel good—items for every day and every occasion.
Our latest category is matching sweats for Moms and Kids, which I designed for myself and my daughter. We started doing sweats during the pandemic and they became a huge bestseller for us. They’re the cutest Mother’s Day gift, and so comfortable.
