Following this, famed artist Paul Gerben presented Piazza with an impressive painting of Piazza at bat in his Mets uniform representing his now retired number, 31.The dinner capped off a week of celebrations and festivities for Piazza. Last Sunday, he was officially inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY and this weekend, he retired his number at Citi Field with an extraordinarily emotional ceremony. In a previous interview with Haute Living that followed the announcement that the athlete’s number would be retired following induction to Cooperstown, Piazza remarked, “I [feel] overwhelmed with emotion, considering the history of the organization. I am in great company alongside Tom Seaver and Casey Stengel. It’s very flattering.”
