Last week, a resolution introduced at the Capitol by Assemblyman Isadore Hall III, D-Compton (Los Angeles County), would name the western span of the Bay Bridge the “Willie L. Brown Jr. Bridge.”
The western span is the structure that links Yerba Buena Island to San Francisco. The naming has nothing to do with the new eastern span, which is the section currently under construction, and has been the subject of scrutiny over faulty bolts and other technical issues.
Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 65 lists Brown’s many political accomplishments in its reasons for naming the bridge after the former Assembly Speaker and mayor of San Francisco.
“Mr. Brown is widely regarded as one of the most line 26 influential politicians of the late 20th century, and has been at the line 27 center of California politics, government, and civic life for an line 28 astonishing four decades,” ACR 65 reads in part.
A resolution only needs a majority vote in the Legislature to take effect. It would not require a signature of the governor.
The legislature would also have to come up with a plan to pay for the signage. That money can not come out of the state budget and would need to be raised using private donations.
The NAACP is sponsoring the bill and would lead that fundraising effort.
