‘Wicked’ Sets New Record on Broadway

During only one week of performances, the musical “Wicked” earned $2,947,172 in box office sales — the highest of any show in Broadway history. Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, “Wicked” plays off the iconic film “The Wizard of Oz” and tells the story of the witches prior to meeting Dorothy.

Despite the show’s popularity (it has been seen by more than 36 million people throughout its nine year run), many argue that high ticket prices are to blame for the massive earnings. On average, audience members pay $181 for an admission ticket, while many shell out $300 for premium seats.

The previous box office record was set by “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.”
