A Creative Valentine’s Day Idea: Wine Tasting in Malibu

Pack up the Roquefort, dust off the old picnic basket and head out west for the wine. If you’re in the mood for an alternative to a candlelit dinner this Valentine’s Day, we have the perfect road map and it has you headed toward the beach. No, we’re not suggesting surf lessons or a sandy supper; we’re sending you on a scenic wine tasting adventure, well above the beaches in the lush canyons of Malibu—yes, Malibu.

For all of you wine savants out there, you already know the location has the ideal conditions for grape vines to thrive in—rocky soil, a high altitude, dry weather during the day, and cool ocean breezes at night.

Sprawled out over 65 acres, Malibu Family Wines at Saddlerock Ranch is the place to taste the fruits of Malibu’s labor. Throw down a blanket under a canopy of oak trees, snuggle up with some hors d’oeuvres and then casually wander into the cabin-style tasting room to sip glasses of Cabernet, Rose, and Chardonnay. Selections from the more exclusive Semler label (named after the founding family who has owned and tilled the land for more than 27 years) include a 2005 merlot, gold medal winner at the 2008 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

Visit with caution, as the surroundings may tempt you to want to romantically camp out under the stars, but unfortunately it’s not an option…yet. Saddlerock flights start at $10 and Semler flights start at $12. The grounds and tasting room are open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week.

31740 Mulholland Hwy. 818.865.0605.
