The World’s First Urban Drive-In Cruises into London

Retro goes metro this summer as the classic drive-in is revamped with the launch of the world’s first urban drive-in.

Redefining the cinematic experience, the urban drive-in allows you to escape stuffy cinemas and enjoy the thrill of watching movies on a full-size screen, outdoors.

And you don’t need your own car nor even be able to drive. A fleet of cars are all provided at the Volvo Starlite Urban Drive-in, meaning you just turn up, get comfortable, listen to the soundtrack through the cars’ surround-sound radio, then order popcorn and a cocktails from the roller- skating waitresses and not have to worry about driving home. You can even cuddle up on the back seat.

Starlite is the idea of writer, cultural entrepreneur and Shoreditch House Salonierre Damian Barr. “We all grew up with the drive-in dream,” says Damian. “But it never happened in Britain because we don’t have the space, the weather, or that car culture. I wanted to update the idea and make it work for an urban, eco-conscious audience and this seemed the perfect way to do it.”

The Starlite program includes two huge movies: one contemporary, one classic Friday night is Twilight night and Saturday night will be one of those Summer Nights, as you join Sandy, Danny, the Pink Ladies and the T-Birds at the drive-in for Grease.

The first of its kind, Starlite premieres with a VIP screening on July 1 and two public screenings on July 2 and July 3 at the ultra-cool Old Truman Brewery in London’s east end. The drive-in will be held at the car park next to the stunning Grade-II listed Boiler House, home to the landmark Truman Chimney.
