The Love List

News | February 14, 2010

Love it or hate it, the most romantic day of the year is here. For all of you who are sitting home alone tonight instead of celebrating sweet love at a gourmet restaurant like Chef Ron Siegel’s The Dining Room in San Fran, La Grenouille in NYC, Michy’s in the Magic City, or Il Cielo in LA, don’t feel blue. You don’t have to be in love to celebrate the luxury lifestyle. The beauty of working hard to achieve your own wealth is that you can lavish yourself with gifts anytime of year.

While there is a certain satisfaction that comes from enjoying the fruits of your own labor, this is Valentine’s Day—a fact that we cannot ignore. With that in mind, we did some research and found some of the haute ticket items that celebrities were buying for their sweeties this year, as well as some of the most expensive Valentine’s Day presents given in recent years.

Angie for Brad

Though reports of a split won’t stop swirling through the papparazzi rumor mill, signs that there is trouble in Brangelina’s paradise have been squashed, just for today, due to Angelina Jolie’s $18,500 Valentine’s Day gift purchase. So what do you get for the man who has everything? A 200-year-old olive tree, of course. News reports indicate that she bought the ancient tree from The English Garden Centre in Valbonne, near their French estate. We’ve heard of extending the olive branch, but this is taking it to quite the extreme. Supposedly the tree will be planted on the property of their Chateau Miraval manor.

Katy Perry for Russell Brand

Reports surfaced all over the Internet earlier this week that songbird Katy Perry has bought a surprise for her sweetie, who was tricked into thinking that they wouldn’t be exchanging gifts this holiday. And if you’re an award-winning singer with some extra cash, what says, “I love you” more than a luxury automobile? Perry reportedly bought a lilac-colored Bentley Brooklands for a mere $340,990, choosing it over an Aston Martin at the last minute.

Raj Kundra for Shilpa Shetty

London-based CEO of UK Tradecorp Ltd made headlines in 2009 when he gave his girlfriend, who later became his wife, approximately 11.5 percent share in the Rajasthan Royals for Valentine’s Day. The cricket team, based in Jaipur, is part of the Indian Premier League, and seems like quite the perfect $15.5 million-present for the Bollywood actress who at the time, commented that she hoped to bring a bit of glamour to her new franchise.

Keith Urban for Nicole Kidman

While it may not be as outrageous as an olive tree, or as expensive as a Bentley or a cricket team, Keith Urban earned some ink for this year’s holiday when he was spotted shopping for sexy lingerie for wife Nicole Kidman. E! Online reported seeing Urban on Wednesday afternoon hitting up West Hollywood’s Trashy Lingerie. Store clerks who don’t seem to care too much about a little thing called client privacy couldn’t wait to dish about what they rang up for him at the register, which included a “naughty schoolgirl outfit, a matching red and black bra and panty set from the Sweetheart Lace Collection and the third was a matching set from the brand new Aphrodite line in red and black.”

Hank Baskett for Kendra Wilkinson

The NFL wide receiver, Hank Baskett, who played for the Indianapolis Colts for the 2009 season, wasn’t afraid to do something different for his lady last year. The pro athlete took his honey whale watching for the holiday. Playmate and reality television star Kendra Wilkinson tweeted about it recently, reporting that this year they will spend the day on land, spending some time in Sin City.
