Haute 100 MIA: Kinky Boots Kicks Off at the Adrienne Arsht Center
Currently celebrating its 10-year anniversary, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami Dade County will kick off the 2015-2016 Broadway in Miami season with the South Florida premiere of Kinky Boots. The Tony Award-winning show is slated to arrive in Miami on Dec. 8th.
Created by four-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein and Grammy Award-winning rock icon Cyndi Lauper, Kinky Boots takes you from a gentlemen’s shoe factory in Northampton to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. Main character Charlie Price is struggling to live up to his father’s expectations and continue the family business of Price & Son.
The show will be directed choreographed by Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchel. It stars J. Harrison Ghee as Lola. Adam Kaplan (Newsies, Showboat) stars as shoe factory owner Charlie Price. Ghee and Kaplan are joined by Tiffany Engen (Legally Blonde) as Lauren, Aaron Walpole (Les Miserables, Jesus Christ Superstar) as Don, Charissa Hogeland (Heathers The Musical) as Nicola, Jim J. Bullock (Hairspray, “Too Close for Comfort”) as George and E. Clayton Cornelious (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical) as the Standby for Lola.
When it debuted in 2013, the Broadway show took home six Tony Awards, the most of any show in the season. The awards includ Best Musical, Best Score (Cyndi Lauper), Best Choreography (Jerry Mitchell), Best Orchestrations (Stephen Oremus) and Best Sound Design (John Shivers). The show also received the Drama League, Outer Critics Circle and Broadway.com Awards for Best Musical and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Album, along with many other accolades.
Since its debut, there have been a number of adaptions. In June, a Toronto production opened, a London production opened in September 2015 and a Melbourne production is slated to open October 2016. A Korean production of Kinky Boots ran from December 2014- February 2015 with a return planned for 2016.
The show will run from Dec. 8-13th. Tickets start at $29 and may be ordered online or by calling the Box Office at 305-949-6722.
