SF Jazz Center Opening Night Brings Shining Stars

Haute Scene, News | February 7, 2013

The first standalone building designed for jazz in the United States has arrived.

After 10 years in the making, the $64 million SF Jazz Center opening Gala drew a star-studded crowd from around the country on January 23, 2013. The crowd, which filled the 700-seat Robert N. Miner Auditorium, sizzled in swanky attire as they hob-nobed, mingled and enjoyed entertainment by Bill Cosby, who emceed the inaugural show.

Guests were treated to a concert by world class jazz musicians, including Esperanza Spalding, tenor saxophonists Joshua Redman and Joe Lovano and pianists McCoy Tyner and Chick Corea.

The soiree brought a slew of A-listers including Tom Waits, Danny Glover, Amy Tan, former Secretary of State George Shultz and hundreds of other jazz aficionados.

SFJazz, the Bay Area nonprofit organization devoted to presenting this art form, is celebrating its 30th season this year.
