What Is Liposuction?
Last reviewed: May 2026 · Haute MD Editorial Team
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that permanently removes localized fat deposits from specific areas of the body using a thin, hollow tube (cannula) connected to a vacuum. It is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States. Liposuction is a body contouring procedure — not a weight loss treatment — and produces best results in patients who are at or near their ideal body weight with localized areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.
Common treatment areas
Abdomen, flanks (love handles), inner and outer thighs, hips, buttocks, arms, knees, back, chest (gynecomastia), neck and under chin (submental), and bra rolls.
Liposuction techniques
Tumescent liposuction: the standard technique — large volumes of dilute local anesthetic are infused before fat removal, reducing blood loss and improving fat removal. Power-assisted liposuction (PAL): vibrating cannula allows more efficient fat removal, particularly in fibrous areas. VASER liposuction (ultrasound-assisted): ultrasound energy liquefies fat before removal, allowing more precise sculpting. Laser-assisted liposuction (SmartLipo): laser energy melts fat and stimulates skin tightening. High-definition liposuction: advanced technique that sculpts the underlying muscles for an athletic, toned appearance.
What liposuction cannot do
Liposuction does not tighten loose or excess skin — patients with significant skin laxity may need a tummy tuck or other skin excision procedure. It does not treat cellulite. It is not a treatment for obesity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is liposuction permanent?
Fat cells removed by liposuction do not grow back. However, remaining fat cells can expand with significant weight gain. Maintaining a stable weight after liposuction preserves results long-term.
What is the difference between liposuction and CoolSculpting?
Liposuction surgically removes fat through physical extraction and produces more dramatic, immediate results with 1-2 weeks of downtime. CoolSculpting is a non-surgical procedure that freezes and gradually eliminates fat over 2-4 months with no downtime but more limited results.
How much fat can be removed with liposuction?
Safety guidelines recommend removing no more than 5 liters of fat in an outpatient setting. Large-volume liposuction (over 5 liters) requires additional safety protocols and monitoring.
Who is a good candidate for liposuction?
Good candidates are at or near their ideal body weight, have good skin elasticity, have localized fat deposits resistant to diet and exercise, are non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about results.
