For Harvard Law student, Logan Brown, searching for an interview suit was both a laborious and frustrating experience. That’s why the 2L took things into her own hands and created her own clothing company.

Spencer Jane was founded out of a need discovered by Brown, with the help of some friends. Last year, Logan visited several shops in her quest for attire that was both professionally appropriate and comfortable for a career fair. She ultimately found nothing.
“I wanted something that would last me well into the beginning of my legal career and also made me feel good,” she said. “I was going to all sorts of malls all over Boston.”
She then reached out to several of her friends seeking a company that hit the mark, only to find they voiced the same frustrations. To get deeper data, she circulated a survey asking respondents where they purchased their pantsuits — and how much time they spend searching for suitable attire, with the intention of writing a paper on the topic for a Business School course she was cross-enrolled in.
“That’s when I realized that this was a common frustration,” Brown said. “There are plenty of places that sell pantsuits, but none that really made what I was looking for. And so that was the original idea — or where the original frustration for Spencer Jane came from.”
Fast forward to January 2021, and the launch of the Spencer Jane website goes live.
Brown uses social media savvy to promote her brand, and has seen great success, amassing more than 70,000 likes on TikTok. Brown is a huge fan of the movie Legally Blonde and has publicly offered to make a pink pantsuit for the film’s star, Reese Witherspoon.
“She wants to sell workwear in a time when a lot of people aren’t going into the office, and she came up with a very clever solution to that challenge, which I really admire,” Randolph B. Cohen, a professor at the Harvard Business School, told the Harvard Crimson.
Versatility is what the brand stands on, being “comfortable enough for a Zoom meeting from the couch but stylish enough for an in-person board meeting.” And with the growth of telecommunication and work-from-home culture across many industries, Brown’s company is primed for success.
