Are you frustrated with your own behind? Over having a flat butt? Is your bottom skin loose from, the weight you gained or lost? And as you age, have you noticed that your cheeks have become asymmetrical? The best news about it all is that there is a fix. The trending Brazilian butt lift (BBL) allows for a lifted appearance with more backside volume. Sounds great, right? It is, but what's the process, and is that your only option? No. Dr. S. Alexander Earle is one of the leading Brazilian butt lift surgeons in the world and he uses a technique called ultrasound-guided BBL. To understand what the difference between a regular BBL and an ultrasound-guided BBL really is, Haute Beauty sat down with Haute Beauty expert Dr. Earle to talk it out.

Explain the differences between an Ultrasound-Guided BBL and a regular BBL?

During a traditional BBL surgery, a doctor must work blindly when placing fat into the buttocks. Dr. Earle uses ultrasound imaging technology to make the procedure much safer. The ultrasound creates images where Dr. Earle can see the gluteal anatomy and make sure we are placing the fat in optimal safe locations, avoiding blood vessels or other important structures. Ultrasound imaging allows Dr. Earle to view the tissues and structures on a screen in real-time.

Explain the process of an ultrasound-guided BBL.

At the time of fat transfer, the ultrasound probe is used to visualize the gluteal anatomy in real-time under sterile conditions. The instrument for transferring the fat is visualized to be in the safe space, the subcutaneous fat layer between the skin and the muscle. The fat is then safely transferred to that space.

What are the benefits of an ultrasound-guided BBL?

The benefit is safety. The BBL is considered one of the most dangerous cosmetic surgeries, and it doesn’t have to be. Dr. Earle takes extra steps to ensure patient safety, such as using the ultrasound probe. Ultrasound guidance during the BBL procedure ensures that the fat is being grafted into the safe subcutaneous space. Going too deep into the gluteal muscle can disrupt large vessels, which can cause fat embolism and lead to major complications, hospitalization, and even death. Dr. Earle has a 0% death rate and he consistently looks for ways to improve safety in every facet of his practice.

Is the healing time shortened since it is an ultrasound-guided procedure?

The healing time is the same: the day after surgery a patient can walk around but will need to sit on a special pillow for at least six weeks to avoid disturbing the fat cells. There is no strenuous activity or heavy lifting for the first six weeks. After six weeks all regular activities may resume.
