Everyone wants a killer smile, right? If you always walk out of the dental office with a cavity-free smile, you will know that having great teeth feels awesome. But if you have been having issues with your teeth, then your smile could use some extra love and care and maybe some TLC. This is why today I am sharing some advice that I give my patients regularly to keep their pearly whites healthy, strong, and bright! Follow these and it might just change your life.
Regular Dental Visits Are Necessary
No matter how busy you are, seeing your dentist 2-3 times a year is definitely something you can make time for. The frequency of your visits should be decided by your dentist depending on your oral health. For most people, a thorough cleaning and checkup every six months are sufficient. However, if your oral health is suffering; a dentist will like to keep a close eye and may call you in more frequently.
Follow The Right Technique of Brushing
A lot of people do not know exactly how teeth are supposed to be brushed. Always make sure that your brush is at a 45-degree angle to the gums and brush in small circles. Also, make sure that you brush for a complete two minutes. If you are having any difficulties following the right technique, you should opt for an electric toothbrush instead!
Floss Your Teeth Everyday
If you are not flossing your teeth regularly, plaque build-up will be inevitable. When flossing, use the c-curve technique. Circle the floss around the tooth and move towards the gum. Then go back to the top and curves of the teeth. Choose a string of floss that is super gentle so that it glides easily. Today there are also alternatives to string floss such as water floss and air floss. You can also discuss with your dentist if these can be suitable for you.

Add a Mouthwash To Your Oral Care Regimen
A mouthwash is not a substitute for brushing and flossing. But adding it to the routine is an added layer of protection. Mouthwashes help in preventing bacteria buildup and keep your teeth safe for longer. What’s more, mouthwash keeps your mouth fresh and prevents bad odor too!
Get Orthodontic Treatment If Necessary
All smiles are beautiful. But many people who do wish to have a straight smile, shy away from braces. Fortunately, these days there are alternative options such as clear aligners that can give you a straight smile without visible brackets and wires. Straighter teeth are easier to clean and also provide a better bite. This also ensures that the teeth do not wear down faster or chip.
If you do get orthodontic treatment, always wear your retainers afterward. Some people do not wear their retainers and their teeth start to shift again!
Wear a guard and avoid chewing on extremely hard food
If you are involved in active sports, always make sure that you wear a mouthguard when playing. Mouthguards not only protect your teeth but can also prevent severe trauma to the brain. Another thing to keep in mind is to avoid chewing on extremely hard surfaces. Biting your nails and chewing on ice are some actions that can cause damage to your teeth.
The key to maintaining good oral health is being consistent with it. If you start following your oral routine but fall off the wagon after a week, your oral health may suffer. Be consistent with your brushing and flossing regimen and visit the dentist timely to be cavity-free and have a great smile!
