Dr. Usha Rajagopal is a pioneer in women’s wellness for over 20 years and is the first to address vaginal rejuvenation in the region. Combining her surgical expertise with a continued focus on client empathy and empowerment, Dr. Rajagopal began offering additional cutting-edge vaginal rejuvenation procedures like labiaplasty, monsplasty, vaginal tightening, Femilift, O-Shot, and now the Emsella. She has performed over 2000 vaginal rejuvenation procedures. Each procedure is designed to instill a sense of pride in patients and meet their most intimate needs, whether related to pain, vaginal tightness, sexual dysfunction, urinary incontinence, aesthetic, or self-consciousness.
Explain the non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation process? How do these treatments help urinary issues?
The vaginal rejuvenation process includes both the external and internal part of the vaginal area. Most people seek out vaginal rejuvenation when they experience looseness either during intercourse or they’re not as satisfied with intercourse. They could have urinary stress incontinence or dryness issues. Both the dryness and urinary stress incontinence are generally from age-related changes, especially after menopause when the estrogen level comes down.
There are two very great treatments to address these issues:
Femilift Laser: A non-surgical laser that resurfaces the internal vaginal canal all the way from the cervix to the outside (introitus area). When this is done, the vaginal mucosa sheds and new vaginal healthy cells are formed and the body increases collagen in that area. By doing this it helps with urinary stress incontinence because the vaginal mucosa gets tighter and some of the heat that’s dissipated to the ligaments around the vagina will also help support the tissues around the bladder. The second benefit is that it will help the dryness issues as now the vagina has new healthy vaginal cells.
Emsella: Helps strengthen the pelvic floor. When you have pelvic floor issues you can experience urinary stress incontinence. Some women who have had children can have a little bit of urine leak by doing certain activities or even when they cough or sneeze. I even hear women say when they do jumping jacks with their kids they have a little leak. When you get older, men and women generally experience urinary stress incontinence. Making the pelvic floor stronger can greatly reduce these symptoms and that’s where the Emsella comes in. Emsella is based on High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology and strengthens the pelvic floor muscles.
Lastly, if we are looking to improve the appearance of the vaginal area non-surgically and externally, there are two options. One is the CO2 Laser to resurface the skin of the vulvar area. It’s the same laser we would use on the face when someone has wrinkles and poor quality skin. The second option is called Infini RF where it uses radio frequency to tighten the skin around the labia majora and also tighten the skin and reduce fat around the mons pubis area.
Who qualifies for this procedure?
It can be both young and older women. I usually do a consultation to determine what their issues and concerns are, then see if they’re a good candidate. For example, if someone has an IUD, then when I’m placing the CO2 Laser, I would want to avoid where the string is and that would be the only reason not to do the Femilift laser. With the Emsella, since it works on electromagnetic pulses, a woman cannot have any metal in the area that’s being treated.
What are the benefits of this procedure?
You can have improvement in urinary stress incontinence, improve moisture for the vaginal canal, and better sensation when having intercourse.
How long do results last? Are there any follow-up treatments necessary?
As with any treatment, our body is dynamic and the tissues do regenerate, but as we get older they regenerate slower. Once we do these treatments these tissues are regenerated at full strength but as time goes by they will weaken. After a patient completes a series of 3 Femilift treatments, I recommend that they come back once every 18 months to 2 years for a touch up with a single treatment.
Once a patient completes their 4 sessions of Emsella and continues with kegels at home, they can maintain pelvic floor health. It’s like any muscle in the body. If you don’t use it you lose it. So if the patient does not do any kegels at home or physical therapy regimen for the pelvic floor after the Emsella, then they would need to come back twice a year for maintenance.
