Have you heard of the first FDA-cleared treatment device for mild to severe acne? AviClear uses the power of a laser to target and suppress your sebaceous glands. Working on all skin types, including darker and tan skin, many dermatologists have been using the treatment on patients. Seeing the success of the treatment, Haute Beauty expert Dr. Ellen Burov delves into the type of acne that AviClear works best on, along with other facts about the laser.
Which acne patients benefit most from AviClear?
- Patients who failed other treatments,
- Patients who are trying to avoid using chemicals, medications, and complicated skincare routines,
- Patients with scarring acne,
- Patients with back acne,
- Patients who want an alternative to Accutane which has side effects, and
- Patients who have very sensitive skin and are unable to tolerate harsh acne topicals.
Is AviClear a good choice for removing blackheads and pores?
Yes, AviClear is a great choice for removing blackheads and pores on the skin with little to no acne since the treatment works on shrinking sebaceous glands and reducing sebum production.
What types of acne does AviClear work on?
Aviclear works for all types of Acne but for hormonal Acne, we sometimes still need some medications to maintain improvement. Overall Aviclear dramatically cuts the number of medications we need to use to achieve lasting results.

What are the treatment protocols?
Standard treatment consists of three treatment sessions one month apart. Each session usually takes about 30-35 minutes for the entire face.
Are the results permanent? Are the results comparable to Accutane?
Acne lasers are relatively new. We currently don’t have enough data to claim it’s permanent but we do have data now for about three years after treatment completion. In a way, Aviclear has an advantage over Accutane - it works equally well in both men and women whereas Accutane is significantly more effective in men. Also, it doesn’t have the side effects of Accutane and you don’t need to check labs during the treatment which is an issue for some patients.
Does AviClear help acne scars?
Aviclear is not the best modality to treat Acne scars, and it wouldn’t be Dr. Burov's first choice to do. We have other more effective devices for acne scarring - lasers, Radiofrequency microneedling, and Plasma resurfacing devices.
