A Coffee Connoisseur & Avocado Enthusiast: NBA Star Jimmy Butler Shares His Simple, Real-Life Diet

Jimmy Butler entered the NBA Bubble as a fan-favorite leader known for his maximum effort and fearless finishing, but he left with a new side hustle as a barista — out of his hotel room, the 32-year-old Miami Heat star began whipping up any type of fresh-brewed coffee for $20 cash, no matter which of the three sizes you ordered. That business venture eventually evolved into the development and ownership of his own coffee brand, Bigface, which recently went online. So thanks to Jimmy Buckets, you can now snag your very own portable espresso station for $100,000. It certainly screams luxury.

His love for the game is followed by his love for coffee, which originated in London after meeting a diverse number of people just by moving around from coffee shop to coffee shop. “The fact that you always have something in common with someone who drinks coffee,” Butler told GQ of his fondness for joe. “You just have to sit down and figure out what it is. If you’re in a coffee shop and you’re drinking, you have something in common with everyone else in there.” Whether served hot, cold, Americano, cortado or over ice cream, coffee connects people from all over the world — something Jimmy seems to express quite affectionately.

He might be a coffee connoisseur, but Butler insists he’s a simple eater. “I just want chicken, potatoes, and some type of green vegetable,” he said. “I’m telling you, if I could eat like a Chipotle-like meal every day—rice, chicken, beans, lettuce, avocado—I’m in. If you put some rice in a bowl, ground turkey, ground chicken, beans and avocado, then I’m good. Any type of wrap. I love salads with fruit and chicken in them. I can eat that every single day and not have a problem with it.” He also praised his chef for doing a great job of mixing up his daily meals, but Butler emphasized that one ingredient must remain in every dish: avocados.

That’s the typical “no-frills” diet that Butler lives by, but the offseason allows him to travel overseas and enjoy various cuisines. “I go with the culture. I don’t eat red meat or pork,” he said. “I’ll eat damn near anything from under the sea if that’s what a place is known for because I want to learn as much as I can about different cultures. But I don’t go crazy and say let me go get five of these alcoholic beverages just because I don’t do it during the season.”

Speaking of alcoholic beverages, Butler is a wine guy. If he’s in Los Angeles, he’ll catch up with Mark Wahlberg—whom Butler speaks of very highly and considers a great friend and mentor—over a glass of wine. If he’s in Italy, the basketball star enjoys a slew of his favorite wines; over there, he not only gets the chance to relax with new faces but reflect on his adolescent years when he didn’t have a passport. “Wine gives me a chance to reflect on seeing so many different countries and all the stamps in my passport now,” he said. “For me, it’s a blessing and I get the opportunity to talk about that with my friends and family. That’s what I use the offseason for.”

A man with great tastes who savors luxury while remembering his humble beginnings—Jimmy, we like you.
