Since it only takes a small amount of fat to change the way someone’s neck looks, this is a problem area for many people. Whether you have inherited it or acquired it over time, the pesky layer of chin fat that we refer to as a double chin is in one of the most prominent places on your body, the face. Luckily, there are ways to reduce the volume of your chin fat through surgical and non-surgical procedures.
Haute Beauty: Can double chins be permanent?
Double chins often are permanent in that once they show up, it rarely goes away on its own even with vigorous diet and exercise. Fortunately, there are a variety of options to address this that can range from non-surgical to surgical.
HB: Is it true that chewing gum can reduce a double chin?
Chewing gum works out the muscles of chewing, which are typically found above your jawline. It is not going to do too much for your neck/chin area.
HB: What are at-home options to reduce the size of a double chin?
Outside of diet and general calorie-burning exercise, there isn’t much someone can do at home to help their double chin.
HB: What are surgical treatment options to remove a double chin?
It depends on what is causing the problem. Sometimes it is just fat only. Sometimes it is loose skin. Sometimes it is both. You must address the source of the problem.
Treatments that target fat can include things like Coolscultping, Kybella, and neck liposuction. Neck liposuction is a procedure that involves removing fat in the neck area. A good candidate for neck liposuction is someone who has fat in their neck above the muscles. If the fat is under the muscles, a different surgery may be required.

Treatments that can address loose skin include surgical neck lifts or something like Facetite/Bodytite to help tighten the skin. Facetite/Bodytite is a radiofrequency-based treatment designed to tighten skin without long scars. It is fantastic for people who either do not want surgery or want to avoid the scars, downtime, and cost of surgery. It can be used in the face/neck to provide a minimally invasive or non-surgical facelift.
HB: How do you know if a double chin will respond to treatment?
Your best chance of having a successful treatment depends on making the appropriate diagnosis. Once you’ve established the problem, whether it be fat or skin or both, then my two favorite treatments are neck liposuction to address fat only and Facetite to address excess skin only or skin/fat. These two procedures have become widely popular for their effectiveness with minimal downtime.
