Juvederm® injectable filler is one of the most popular dermal fillers in the United States, with five types of Juvederm products available to plump lips, restore volume, smooth lines, and treat wrinkles and facial folds. Dr. Michele Green is a NYC Allergan Platinum Injector, utilizing Botox and the Juvederm family of fillers, to help restore, rejuvenate and enhance your face to achieve a more youthful and enhanced appearance.

What is Juvederm?

The Juvederm family of fillers was developed by Allergan, the maker of Botox Cosmetics. Juvederm is a smooth injectable gel that is injected into the mid to deep dermal layer of the skin. Each different Juvederm dermal filler has its own unique properties and is targeted to treat different areas of the body to provide various treatment options. Juvederm is an injectable filler that is composed of hyaluronic acid and restores the body’s own natural hyaluronic acid that is currently being depleted. The injection of hyaluronic acid into deep facial wrinkles, creases, and folds adds volume and fullness and enhances the moisture content of the skin. Juvederm was FDA approved in 2006 for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the smile lines or nasolabial folds. Juvederm Ultra Plus XC was the “original” dermal filler developed to treat these deeper lines and wrinkles in the face. Since that time, five other products in the Juvederm family of injectables have been created. Each Juvederm injectable was designed to treat a different area of the face and different types of volume loss or facial wrinkles.

Juvederm family of facial fillers

Juvederm Ultra: Juvederm Ultra XC restores lost facial volume to smooth mild to moderate nasolabial folds, smile lines, and marionette lines. It is also used for lip augmentation.

Juvederm Ultra Plus XC: Juvederm Ultra Plus XC treats moderate to severe nasolabial folds, smile lines, and marionette lines.  It is also used for lip enhancement. Juvederm Ultra Plus XC is compounded with lidocaine to minimize any discomfort from the injection.

Juvederm Voluma XC: Juvederm Voluma is the ideal product to add volume to cheeks, chin, and restore lost facial volume. Voluma is designed for facial contouring, lifting the cheeks, improving facial sagging, and the appearance of jowls and facial hollows.

Juvederm Vollure: Juvederm Vollure was created for the nasolabial folds with 18-month longevity for this dermal filler.

Juvederm Volbella: Juvederm Volbella was created for a subtle enhancement of the lips, fine wrinkles, and under-eye hollows (tear troughs), for under-eye rejuvenation.

Juvederm Volite: This is the first injectable treatment that provides clinically proven dermal hydration, after just one treatment. It works on improving overall skin quality, as it improves elasticity, hydration, and fine lines.

Chin enhancement with Juvederm Voluma

One important area of facial enhancement which has been previously neglected is the chin area. In the Spring of 2020, Juvederm Voluma was FDA-approved not only to treat the cheek area but the chin area. Treating the chin area provides much-needed symmetry to the face. The amount of dermal filler depends on how much each individual needs, but most patients need at least one syringe. Juvederm Voluma creates a liquid chin lift when injected into the chin, and appears smooth and natural. 

Coupled with increased skin laxity, this area of the face benefits enormously from volume replacement. If there is submental fat under the chin, treating with Kybella injections, to dissolve unwanted fat, will remove the “double chin” and improve the overall appearance of the chin and jawline.

Cheek enhancement with Juvederm Voluma

Juvederm Voluma was FDA approved in 2013 for injections of the cheek area and malar area. Dr. Michele Green is one of the largest users of Juvederm Voluma in NYC and considers it the ideal filler to restore lost collagen in the cheek area. Volume loss in the midface is a chief concern of many of her NYC patients and Juvederm Voluma XC is the ideal way to replenish this lost volume and improve facial sagging. By lifting the cheeks and restoring a more youthful appearance, the sagging in the jowls and lower face are cosmetically improved. 

By restoring the lost volume through facial contouring, the appearance of the jowls are improved, the face is lifted, resulting in a non-surgical facelift. Juvederm Voluma can be used to replace other areas of volume in the face, besides the cheeks, indulging the nasolabial folds, chin, jawline, and temples.

Treating nasolabial folds with Juvederm

Nasolabial folds or smile lines are one of the first areas in the face to experience volume loss.  Juvederm Ultra Plus is made especially for these deep lines, creases, and the lines which extend down the mouth to the oral commissures, the marionette lines. Juvederm Vollure was developed as a response to the need for a long-term dermal filler in the smile lines. Juvederm Vollure lasts approximately 18 months when treating these “parentheses lines” and is an extremely natural-looking injection.

Juvederm Volbella XC for lips and fine lines

Juvederm Volbella XC is an injectable gel that is designed to treat the area in and around the lips. Volbella injections use an ultra-fine needle to temporarily plump the lips for lip augmentation and to smooth the appearance of lines around the mouth. Juvederm Volbella XC injections have the same composition as Juvederm Volbella, but the “XC” denotes the addition of lidocaine, a numbing agent. This small amount of lidocaine allows for greater comfort during the lip injection by reducing any pain sensitivity.

What is Juvederm Ultra Plus used for?

Juvederm Ultra Plus is primarily targeted to treat deep folds in and around the lips–including nasolabial folds (“smile lines”) and marionette lines–and for voluminous lip enhancement. Whether you’re interested in restoring lost volume to your lips which occurs naturally over time or are craving a fuller pout than your natural lip provides, Juvederm Ultra Plus can provide you with what you want, without the need for invasive plastic surgeries or recovery time.

What should I expect during treatment?

Numbing medication will typically be used to help improve your comfort during the Juvederm procedure. There may be some mild discomfort that is associated with needles and being injected, and there may be a mild to moderate amount of stinging post-injection. After the Juvederm treatment, a patient should expect to feel some minor soreness, tenderness, redness, or swelling that will last a few days.

How soon until I see the results of Juvederm injections?

With filler treatments such as Juvederm, there can be some minor swelling and bruising, however, results can be seen almost immediately. After two weeks, all of the swelling should be resolved and the full cosmetic results of the treatment will be revealed.
