Haute Beauty: The summer often spells travel and vacation, and many prefer not to make any major aesthetic changes during that time. But what small pick-me-ups are great procedures to have throughout the hot months to keep ourselves radiant and in shape?
Dr. Jhonny Salomon: The summer months bring increased exposure to sun and high temperatures, which make it a very important time to pay extra attention to your skin. Regular treatments that promote hydration such as Hydrafacial are an excellent option for maintaining a radiant glow all year round. Non-invasive body treatments such as Velashape III and Coolsculpting are extremely popular as well to ensure you're always bathing suit ready. Many of my international patients from South America and Europe specifically do tend to schedule their more invasive procedures during the summer months since it's a time when the kids are off from school and they are able to take time to recover. Botox and injectable treatments also are very popular as they act as a quick refresher all year round.
HB: If someone prefers to dedicate their summer vacation to getting plastic surgery, then what are your tips for fast recovery so they can still enjoy the season?
JS: Post-surgery, it is vital that patients avoid the sun and heat while also staying indoors as much as possible to support their recovery. My practice incorporates lymphatic drainage massages into the surgical package as part of the recovery protocol to expedite recovery and assist in reducing inflammation.
HB: What are some of the most requested surgical procedures to sculpt the body and face ahead of the summer? What care should patients take during the hot months after them?
JS: Many patients schedule their breast augmentations and lifts, tummy tuck, liposuction, facelifts and rhinoplasty procedures in preparation for summer. However, in the months following surgery, it is important you protect your scars from the sun to avoid hyperpigmentation of the scar itself.
HB: For someone who did not coordinate the downtime of any summer-ready treatments with their schedules well, what small face and body surgical procedures they can have to improve their appearance fast?
JS: In a time where we're all very busy, not all patients are able to plan their surgeries so far in advance. For those who are looking for a quicker non-invasive procedure, I would recommend facial skin tightening such as Thermage to stimulate the collagen production in the skin as well as fat grafting, injectables or Botox. Body procedures such as Coolsculpting, which freezes away fat, and Vellashape III, which aides in the reduction of cellulite and circumference, are both excellent treatments to summer preparations. These procedures all offer excellent results with minimal downtime.
HB: Beyond using sunscreen, how should we care about our skin in summer?
JS: Sunblock should be a very important component of your skincare regimen. Specifically, using a sunblock that does not fade or rub off with perspiration/water is very important. My favorite one would be the one SkinCeuticals as it's long-lasting and offers great protection. Additionally, regular exfoliation and hydration are very important as well. Scheduling regular Microdermabrasion treatments to exfoliate and Hydrafacials to hydrate are easy to incorporate into your summer skincare routine.
