When Tricon Marine premiered its first yacht, the Argos Gulfstream 92, in 2009, it garnered a good deal of publicity. The China-based boatbuilder, under Euro-American management, believed there was room in the marketplace for an intrepid expedition yacht that blended softer lines with the rugged looks that typically hallmark these launches. It also believed that yacht buyers should have a handful of sizes from which to choose under the 100-foot mark.

Even though it’s the 17th 76-footer that Nordhavn has delivered, Eliana stands out on several accounts. Remarkably, Eliana is the first yacht ever purchased by its owners, Rick and Debbie Heiniger. Another notable fact: They plan to live aboard. But above all, the relationship that the Heinigers had with Nordhavn and interior designer Scott Cole of Ardeo Design has resulted in a floating home that both the build and design teams consider among the most beautiful of the 76s delivered to date.

There’s a lot of talk these days about being eco-friendly, and both yacht owners and yacht builders are doing their share to protect the environment. A good example is the motoryacht Exuma, which received two big honors last month: Green Plus Platinum certification and the Green Yacht of the Year award. Oct. 13 was a pretty ordinary day for most people, except for the owner and management team of Big Fish. Over the course of six decades, Whiticar Boat Works has been building custom sportfishing boats — except for one instance in the 1960s. That’s when John Hay “Jock” Whitney, a businessman, philanthropist and avid sportsman, commissioned the one and only motoryacht it ever built.
