Three Beautiful Ways to Celebrate Mural Arts Month

Parking is a mess and we need to do something about Delaware Avenue, stat, but it’s hard to deny that Philadelphia is a beautiful city. A few centuries worth of architecture, quaint green squares and stunning mural paintings give every corner personality. Its that latter special touch that you need to get out and enjoy now, since October is Mural Arts Month. With more than 3,000 ispirational pieces from the Great Northeast to South Philly, there’s a corner and a story for you to discover.
Head to the Mural Arts Program‘s website — www.muralarts.org — to find a mural near you, or hop on the popular trolley tours to be chauffeured through the city streets, stopping at some of the most popular creations.
Or, check out one of these special Mural Arts Month to-dos:
The Evolving Face of Nursing
Visit Philadelphia’s newest mural, a piece done by Meg Saligman at Broad and Vine Streets. Using an eco-friendly and unusual medium — LED lights — the mural shines in a moving (literally) image of more than 80 nurses from the area.
Bigbelly Scavenger HuntHave you noticed that your friendly neighborhood trash compactor is a little more, well, friendly looking? Students from the Mural Arts Program’s Big Picture program decorated more than 50 of the utilitarian machines with everything from vinyl to glitter. Help find them all this Wednesday, October 13, starting at 4 p.m.
Cops & Kids
At-risk youth and area law enforcement make an unlikely pairing, but one that delivers stunning results. Check out the annual program’s 2010 art project at The Gallery at Market East as its unveiled on October 21 at 8:30 a.m.
See www.muralarts.org for all details.
