License to Buy: James Bond Novelist Ian Fleming’s Rare Aceca Coupé Sells For Record Fee
A 1962 AC Aceca Coupé formerly owned by the James Bond novelist Ian Fleming, sold for £80,000 at a London auction.
The car is one of only six surviving Ford-powered Acecas in the world and £80,000 is the most believed ever paid for this model.
It was purchased by the thriller writer in the same year that The Spy Who Loved Me was completed—the book in which the hero Bond drives a Lotus Esprit.
Fleming bought the dark blue car with a red leather interior from the factory and now the car has been restored it makes a vehicle for a budding Bond.
The two-seater hand built sports car is capable of 130mph with its Ford Zephyr six-cylinder engine.
It has no secret gadgets, rocket-launchers or revolving number plates but does have seatbelts—unlike many cars from that era.
After Fleming, it was owned by various people and spent some time in Holland before returning to the UK and having a makeover by its current owner who is now selling it.
The car was sold by prestigious auction house Bonhams at Goodwood, during the Revival classic car event. The vehicles sold at the auction realized over £3 million in total.
Another motorcar once owned by Sarah, Duchess of York, a 1988 Jaguar XJ-S V12 Convertible sold for £23,000 at the Goodwood Revival sale.
Other top prices were paid for a 1949 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport Cabriolet, at £188,500; a 1938 Lagonda V12 Drophead Coupé, which sold for £186,300; and a 1959 Aston Martin DB4 Series 1 Sports Saloon, the twenty-sixth ever produced, brought in £145,600.
