Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week: Bibhu Mohapatra Spring 2011 Presentation
It was “27 Dresses” this afternoon at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. But this had nothing to do with that Katherine Heigl film. Instead, the dresses were all part of Bibhu Mohapatra’s Spring 2011 Presentation.
This presentation was like a breath of fresh air despite the long wait to actually get inside The Box to view the collection. Once inside, however, guests forgot about the line outside and were in awe of what was in front of them. The entire presentation was one large 360-degree still life set up; guests were the artists, trying to choose their favorite angle to begin painting.
Mohapatra, the former design director of J. Mendel, has now come into his own with this collection and has perfected the art of dressmaking. His choice of fabrics and colors were meticulously planned making every piece inherently captivating, as if each had its own identity and story behind it.
Among a wide variation in patterns, shapes, and fabrics, one theme that stood out was the use of black cinch belts around the models’ waists, creating sleek, ultra-feminine silhouettes. Black and white were the most featured colors, which helped brighter dresses like the grass green and the plum silk stand out even more. The stone canvas coat also stood out among the gowns, which subtly showed off some intricate patterns and detailing.
So if you hadn’t heard of Mohapatra before reading this, get ready, because you will soon likely be hearing a lot about him! Judging from this presentation, he has much success to look forward to in the upcoming year.
