Between all the great musical performances and the standard outlandishness, it’s hard to be the most buzzed about topic at MTV’s Video Music Awards. However, Lady Gaga, who is no stranger to extreme media coverage, has managed to do just that. The songstress not only managed to rack up an impressive 8 VMA, but also generated some controversy surrounding one of her many outfits of the night. While accepting the award for “Video of the Year”, Gaga donned an entire ensemble composed out of raw red meat. From head to toe, every inch of her dress, hat, purse, and even platform boots were covered in beef.
Naturally PETA was infuriated by the outfit, releasing a statement that among other things state, “Meat is the decomposing flesh of a tormented animal who didn’t want to die, and after a few hours under the TV lights, it would smell like the rotting flesh it is and likely be crawling in maggots—not too attractive, really.”
Today on Ellen, Gaga spoke to the vegan hostess about her meat dress. “Well, it’s certainly no disrespect to anyone that’s vegan or vegetarian. I, as you know, am the most judgment-free human being on Earth. However, it has many interpretations — but for me this evening it’s that if we don’t stand up for what we believe in, if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones. And I am not a piece of meat.”
The controversial getup was designed by Franc Fernandez who claimed the meat actually came from his family butcher. He even posted photos on his blog to show how the garment was constructed. Though the designer is known for his avant-garde creations, he may have outdone himself.
Whether you loved or hated the outfit, there is one thing everyone can agree on. It was definitely the most talked about topic at this year’s awards.
