An evening at Mottai in Coral Gables feels less like stepping into a restaurant and more like entering a carefully composed experience where culinary craft, atmosphere, and storytelling unfold in unison. Located within The Plaza Coral Gables, the restaurant introduces a distinctive concept that blends traditional Japanese techniques with Miami’s vibrant dining culture, creating a setting that feels both globally refined and unmistakably local. The visit itself was arranged as a multi course tasting experience that offered a deeper look into the philosophy driving the kitchen and the team behind it.

From the moment guests arrive, the tone is set by an interior that balances elegance with warmth. Inspired by French Japonisme, the design merges European architectural elements with Japanese symbolism. Marble tables, deep blue velvet seating, and striking white crane wall art frame the dining room, creating a refined environment that transitions naturally from bright and airy during the day to more intimate and atmospheric in the evening.

A highlight of the evening came through meeting the owner and learning more about the vision behind Mottai. The restaurant represents the first United States venture from Brazil’s acclaimed Attivo Group, a hospitality company known for creating thoughtful dining concepts. Bringing that approach to Coral Gables meant crafting a restaurant where Japanese culinary discipline meets a more relaxed, Miami inspired dining experience.

Chef Brian Nasajon collaborated with sushi chef Hiroshi Shintaku to create a menu rooted in Japanese techniques while embracing ingredients and flavors that resonate with Miami’s diverse palate. The menu favors shareable dishes and ingredient driven plates that encourage exploration, beginning with lighter cold preparations designed to awaken the palate.

Cold small plates highlight the kitchen’s ability to reinterpret Japanese classics. Hamachi appears with white soy ponzu and citrus oroshi, delivering a balanced combination of brightness and depth. Hirame is paired with spicy pomelo and lemongrass, introducing subtle tropical notes that complement the delicate fish. These early courses set the tone for a menu that respects tradition while allowing room for creative interpretation.

As the tasting progresses, the menu moves toward more substantial offerings that showcase seafood and grill driven dishes. The Sugi Katsu offers a seafood focused take on the classic dish, using cobia with a crisp exterior served alongside ponzu aioli. Another standout is the American Wagyu rib eye accompanied by shiso tempura and tare sauce, delivering richness balanced by herbal crispness.

One of the evening’s most memorable dishes is the Kinoko Hot Pot, finished tableside with egg yolk, furikake, and chili crunch folded into steamed rice. The interactive presentation and layered umami flavors make it a comforting yet elevated moment in the tasting experience.

For diners drawn to the purity of sushi, the restaurant’s sushi counter highlights seasonality and precision. Curated nigiri and sashimi selections showcase the chefs’ attention to detail, while maki options such as the Salmon Tataki Maki and Toro Taku Maki bring a creative balance of flavor and texture.

Dessert continues the theme of reinterpretation. The Mango Chawanmushi offers a tropical twist on the traditional Japanese custard with mango and coconut, while the Chocolate Fondant is elevated with a black sesame cocoa nib tuile and Okinawa espresso ice cream. Together, they provide a refined finish to the meal.

What ultimately defines Mottai is the clarity of its vision. Every element, from the design to the culinary approach, reflects a careful balance between Japanese technique and Miami’s vibrant dining culture. In a city known for constantly evolving restaurants, Mottai offers an experience that feels thoughtful, polished, and quietly memorable.
