Estate of the Day: Greenwich Village
92 Jane Street is a 5000 square foot, 24 foot wide townhouse in New York City’s Greenwich Village Historic District. Recently renovated, the townhouse’s landmark status facilitated the preservation and reconstruction of its existing 1858 Greek revival façade. The building’s interior organization is driven by its unique south facing rear yard which is enclosed by blind 35 foot high walls, creating a condition of total privacy. This allows the rear façade to be completely transparent. It also makes a private outdoor room that serves as an extension of the living and dining spaces; entry to it is across a marble slab that bridges a reflecting pond. The elegant organization of the house creates a series of generalized spaces that offer enormous programmatic flexibility. Rooms are outfitted in a consistent palette of rich but neutral materials: white oak, painted plaster and subtly veined marble. The building’s public and private spaces are united in the roof top penthouse. Open to both street and garden this transparent volume frames extraordinary views of the city. This house was awarded an American Institute of Architects Honor Award for architectural distinction.
