This month, Barry’s Bootcamp, the boutique fitness studio that specializes in high-intensity interval training, is opening three new locations in the Bay Area. Adam Shane, the managing partner of Barry’s Bay Area, is the man behind the workout magic. He brought the intense running and weight training class to San Francisco four years ago and has helped the community grow into what it is today: a beloved family of inspiring trainers and hard-working clients. With Barry’s coming to the Castro, Palo Alto, and Burlingame in January, it’s the perfect time to hone in on those new year fitness goals. To ensure that you meet and maintain the best you, Shane’s sharing his tips for how to commit to a workout plan.

Do drink plenty of water especially in the morning. Choose room temperature water with a squeeze of lemon. Room temperature water is good for digestion, detox, and pain relief. Other benefits include increased brain power and energy, promotion of healthy weight management and weight loss, flushing out toxins, improving complexion, maintaining regularity, and boosting the immune system.

Don’t beat yourself up if you miss a workout or veer off your food plan. Guilt and stress can be triggers for more unhealthy habits and will make it harder to sleep. Brush it off—get up to fight another day.

Do sweat once daily whether through light (walking) or rigorous exercise. Sweating when exercising can produce endorphins which act as natural painkillers. Sweating also helps keep your hair and skin healthy and purifies the skin.

Don’t feel guilty; nobody is perfect.

Do aim for balance. It’s not just about diet and exercise.  Achieving a balance of wellness and treating/enjoying yourself will help reduce the stress and pressure of missing a workout or having a meal you may feel guilty about. 

Don’t be afraid to splurge on yourself when it comes to your health and wellness. Try the fitness class that may be pricey or purchase that luxe fitness outfit. You may surprise yourself by how much motivation that provides.

Do grab a workout buddy. There is strength in numbers so hold one another accountable. You’ll find that you are more likely to show up to your workouts when you know someone is waiting for you.

Don’t be afraid to try. The number one thing I hear from new clients is that they are scared, intimated, or think they can’t do it. After class, they always say they surprised themselves. Don’t let fear get in the way of taking the plunge. The first time for anything is always the hardest, but everyone had a first time. You will feel a sense of accomplishment after.

Do challenge yourself. Go outside of your comfort zone—especially during workouts. Take a new fitness class, try something different. The more you challenge yourself in your workouts, the more results you will see and the better you will feel. You never know what you can achieve unless you try.
