Why Wine Lovers Need To Visit One Market This Month

For the past 25 years, One Market, a grand American brasserie, has held court on the corner of Market and Embarcadero Streets. The restaurant has stood the test of time for many reasons—to name a few: its exceptional cuisine, its celebratory atmosphere, and its friendly staff. A vast wine cellar also makes the eatery a destination for oenophiles. Special events are another factor that makes One Market a place to frequent. Take sommelier Tonya Pitts‘ current promotion for example. For July Pitts has curated a unique female-centric wine list. All of these wines—and the list is extensive—are available at half the regular price. The wineries are either owned by women or feature female winemakers.

Participating wineries included Duckhorn Vineyards, Donkey and Goat Winery, Groth Vineyards, and Domaine Curry—Ayesha Curry and Sydel Curry’s new Cabernet Sauvignon. “Ayesha and I are honored to have Domaine Curry included in a wine program that features amazing women in wine at one of San Francisco’s most well-established fine dining establishments,” Sydel told Haute Living. “We hope that many fall in love with Femme 31 just as we have!” Theodora R. Lee, the vintner and owner of Theopolis Vineyards said “as a female, African-American vintner in the white, male-dominated landscape of wine professionals, One Market’s July promotion of Women in Wine is a unique opportunity to showcase the award-winning wines of Theopolis Vineyards. Also, as a small producer, being able to collaborate professionally with other women winemakers at the Women in Wine Reception is empowering. Thanks to One Market’s award-winning Sommelier Tonya Pitts for continuing to be a trailblazer by creating opportunities for all in the wine business.”

Alison Smith-Story agreed with Lee’s sentiments saying “I’m thrilled to be featured during this important woman in wine focus at One Market. Tonya has set the bar for wine programs in San Francisco, and she just raised it a little higher by showing off the ladies who are behind so many great wines. One day, gender won’t be such a big deal. Women have been making wine and running all facets of the wine business as long as men, but recognition is still needed—this is changing because of support like Tonya’s.”
The regular wine list at One Market has about 650 selections. Of these offerings, 130 of them are owned or run by females. Pitts will swap out certain bottles during the month to ensure that all of the women wineries are featured. Enjoy Domaine Carneros Brut, Flowers Chardonnay, Merry Edwards Pinot Noir, or Continuum’s Cabernet Sauvignon at half the price. Or even better—think of it has two for one. Why not get a second bottle Joseph Phelps Insignia?
One Market’s Women in Wine event runs through the end of the month.
