Have Your Next Steak In This NYC Bank Vault
The bank vault under the New Yorker Hotel is letting people inside, though they're offering something far more delicious looking.
New to the city’s restaurant scene is Butcher & Banker, the modern steakhouse restaurant located under the New Yorker Hotel. The newly opened space is built into a former bank vault located below ground, that used to belong to the Manufacturers Trust Company, and serves up chic, classic eats from Executive Chef Scott Campbell.
A former alum of New York dining stalwarts like Windows on the World, Le Cirque, and Union Square Café, Campbell is using Butcher & Banker to show off his skills with a meat-based menu that includes including a massive Kan-Kan Pork Chop, Tomahawak Ribsteak and Cowboy Bone-in Ribeye. The décor around the restaurant also speaks to the restaurants financial roots, with restored safety deposit boxes lining the walls.
While the silver metal glean of the vault door may give a more practical look to the space, don’t let the feature fool you. The restaurant is a modern, high-end approach to dining, with a beautiful chandelier dangling from the ceiling and plush, red seating ready to make any diner comfortable.
The restaurant also focuses on the history of the vault in part to pay homage to the legendary hotel that sits above the space. In its heyday, The New Yorker Hotel was frequented by guests like John F. Kennedy, Mohammed Ali, and even Nikola Tesla, who died in the hotel in 1943.
Butcher & Banker is open from 4:30-10:30 every night, with the bar continuing to serve until 2:00am. The restaurant is located at 481 8th Avenue between 34th and 35th Street.
