The Henley Royal Regatta

As London’s society calendar is in full swing, The Henley Royal Regatta is yet another excuse for the cities best-connected to don a flamboyant hat, knock back the Pimms, and set out a picnic—that’s if your attire will stretch to allow for all the canapés consumed so far this summer.

First held as a single afternoon race in 1839, the Henley Royal Regatta today offers 100 world-class races and the chance to see some Olympic rowing stars. The event has become internationally renowned as the largest racing regatta in the world.

The regatta lasts for five days over the first weekend in July. Races are head-to-head knock out competitions raced over a course of 1 mile, 550 yards (2,112 m) and regularly attracts international crews. The most prestigious event at the regatta is the Grand Challenge Cup for Men’s Eights, which has been awarded since the regatta was first staged.
