While Art Basel Miami may be a few months away, the Miami art scene is active all year long. Seek refuge from soaring temperatures and frequent downpour in one of these expertly curated art exhibitions.

Cathedrals of Consumption at Spinello Projects

Staged as a modern home, Cathedrals of Consumption explores consumerism and mass consumption by examining the cultural associations that have evolved around household items. Contemporary art and applied design pervade this exhibition, smartly curated by Guillermo Leon Gomez, with works by Gabriele Beveridge, Andy Coolquitt, Kalup Linzy, Ad Minoliti, Bert Rodriguez, Amanda Ross-Ho, and Mika Rottenberg.
Cathedrals of Consumption runs until July 30, 2016.

Wrap Your Arms Around Me at Gallery Diet

Childhood is a short season, and that is what Wrap Your Arms Around Me highlights in an exposition of historic and contemporary children’s furniture. Works by Katie Stout, Chen & Kai, Lucas Maassen, Sarit Shani Hay, Philippe Nacson, ADO, Eero Aarnio, and Henner Kuckuck encourage nostalgia and dialogue around this fleeting time of life. Paintings have also been commissioned from Michael Clifford, which continue to elaborate upon the qualities of childhood
Wrap Your Arms Around Me opens July 9 and runs through September 3, 2016.

How I Caught a Swallow in Midair at Pérez Art Museum Miami

Samples of Michele Oka Doner‘s work since the 1960s come together in this exploration of natural elements where paper, terra-cotta, wax, porcelain, and stone make up the materials used. A selection of sculptures and drawings shows us a visual timeline of the Miami artist’s natural inspirations throughout her career, aptly titled after a recent cyanotype print.

Promising Paradise: Cuban Allure, American Seduction at Wolfsonian FIU

Based on a gift from Vicki Gold Levi, the Wolfsonian will be exhibiting a collection of over 1’000 artifacts from the American-Cuban tourist trade era of the first half of the 20th century. Curated by Francis X. Luca, a series of photographs and film clips will send viewers back to the pinnacle of US-Cuba relations, where American marketers and Cuban artists motivated trade, tourism, and togetherness.
Promising Paradise runs through August 21, 2016.
