Chef Of The World’s Most Expensive Kebab Will Pay You £1000 To Do It Better
Let’s think about what £925 can buy today. Perhaps a month’s rent, a new Maison Margiela bag, a 13 inch Apple MacBook Pro… or one single kebab at chef Onder Sahan’s London restaurant.
The Hazev Restaurant in Canary Wharf, London officially claims the world’s most expensive kebab. In a city where kebab culture often revolves around drunken food cravings, this pricey position comes as a surprise. Chef Sahan set his sights on creating a new reputation for the kebab that deferred it from merely a midnight snack.
‘We try to change the kebab image, and then we show people if you have good taste and then you can make it whatever way you like it,’ he says.
So what warrants such a hefty price tag for this particular kebab? For starters, the meat component is made with the finest Japanese Wagyu beef and mixed with fresh morel mushrooms and a 25-year-old Italian vinegar. This Terre Bormane Italian vinegar alone costs £185 for just a 10cl bottle. Other ingredients include French Chaumes cheese with courgette flowers, Turkish basil, Jerusalem artichokes and La Vallee des Baux olive oil. Chef Sahan is so confident in the creation that he says he will pay over £1000 to anyone that can make one better. While this is certainly a tempting challenge, it will be no easy feat. Chef Sahan claimed first prize as Britain’s best kebab chef at the British Kebab Awards earlier this month. Yes, Britain has an annual kebab competition.
While there are certainly wiser ways to spend £925, we say if you’ve got the money, why not? It’s not every day you get to treat yourself to the world’s most expensive kebab. So, treat yourself!
