Jeweler To The Stars, David Webb, Designs in Wood
If you are not familiar with David Webb—the 1960’s and ’70s jeweler to the stars, you’re in for a treat.
The Ashand, North Carolina “go-to jeweler for society swans and Hollywood stars” was known for his animal bracelets and a rich grouping of pieces. During his time as a jewelry designer he employed yellow gold, pearls, and enamel in his work and embraced art deco styles. Some of his clients were Gloria Vanderbilt, Jackie Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor, Brooke Astor and Doris Duke.He started his design house in 1948 in a small walk up with a few employees in the Diamond District of NYC. By the age of 25 he reached the pinnicle—the cover of Vogue magazine. It’s no surprise that Vogue editor, Diana Vreeland was a customer.
Unfortunately Mr. Webb is no longer here but his jewelry collection carries on with new designers who take the essence of his bold pieces and reimagines them. Case in point the brand new collection made in wood. The grouping is called “Woodworks” is crafted from Ebony wood and 18K gold with shapes echoing details on clothing like the “shoelace” cuff and “buckle” ring. The prices for this new grouping is from $6,800 to $19,500 and are sold at Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman and their own David Webb Boutiques from New York to LA. (See below for address and web link)
