This Hermès Birkin Bag Set a New World Record
On Monday, June 1st, one fashionista dished out a whooping $222,000 for a handbag at the Christie’s Hong Kong Spring 2015 auction.
The fuchsia pink crocodile Hermès Birkin bag, which is studded with 18-carat white gold and diamonds, sold to an over the phone bidder for $1.72 million Hong Kong dollars.
Dubbed as “fashion’s ultimate status symbol” by BBC, the Hermès Birkin bag has long been a hot commodity among celebrities and socialites. Named after British actress Jane Birkin, the quintessential fashion accessory was created about 31 years ago, in 1984. Since then it has risen to the top of the fashion accessory totem pole.
Celebrities like Victoria Beckham, is rumored to have about 100 Birkins. Other celebrities who has been spotted rocking Hermes finest arm-candy are Rachel Zoe, the Kardashians, Jennifer Lopez, Kate Moss and Lady Gaga, to name a few.
More than 300 bags were curated for the event including 286 Hermès, 43 Chanel bags, six Louis Vuittons and three Fendi bags. Styles ranged from crocodile, lizard, and ostrich exotics as well as a number of sought-after limited editions.
In the last seven years, 348 Birkins has been auctioned, according to a report by Collector Square.
Christie’s Hong Kong Spring 2015 auction commenced May 28the and will conclude June 3rd. The auction is currently showcasing a curated selection across a range of categories, led by a number of significant private collections including the Feng Wen Tang Collection, paintings by Chinese modern artists, timepieces by the world’s most prestigious watchmakers as well as luxury handbags and accessories.
