Michael Bastain, designer of his eponymous menswear label known for preppy Americana-inspired clothing, will be designing a womenswear line in partnership with Sweden sportswear brand Gant.
Bastain has been collaborating with Gant since launching Gant by Michael Bastain last season, offering pieces coinciding with both labels’ aesthetic at a lower price point than his own line, but 20 percent higher than regular Gant items. Typical selections include khakis, polo shirts, and ski sweaters.
The idea to launch a women’s collection arose while the team worked on the menswear Spring 2011 campaign and were trying to figure out the female counterpart to feature. An entire women’s collection was then conceived and executed.
The women’s collection is set to launch alongside the men’s collection during fashion week in the fall and will have an edgier feel than the men’s Lacrosse-themed collection. Distribution of the women’s fall collection will be much more limited than men’s, which is set to roll out in more than 100 stores domestically and internationally.
