Disney Junior Live Offers Autism-Friendly Show For Children in NYC

To make live theatre more accessible for children with autism, a nonprofit called the Theatre Development Fund, is offering a one-night performance of “Disney Junior Live On Tour! Pirate & Princess Adventure” at Madison Square Garden next month. By eliminating jarring sounds and strobe lights, the organization hopes to make individuals with autism feel more comfortable in the theater.

The 5,000 person seating area will also be outfitted with beanbag chairs and coloring books, plus multiple quiet areas, in case any audience members need a relaxing place to decompress from the stimulation. Autism experts will also be on hand to answer questions and facilitate throughout the day.

The organization previously staged autism-friendly showings of “The Lion King,” “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” and “Wicked.” But next month’s show is the first of its kind to target a younger audience on the autism spectrum.

The show will take place on April 19. Tickets range in price from $32 to $69.
