Marilyn Monroe’s White Dress from ‘The Seven Year Itch’ Votes Most Iconic Screen Costume
It’s hard to think about Marilyn Monroe without conjuring up an image of her standing above a subway grate as her dress playfully billows in the breeze. In fact, the white halterneck dress has become such a fan-favorite that it was recently voted “the most iconic screen outfit of all time” in a survey commissioned by the British Heart Foundation.
Monroe donned the infamous dress, which was designed by costume designer William Travilla, in the 1955 film The Seven Year Itch. In the memorable scene, she stands above a subway grill wearing the iconic dress and bright red lipstick, laughing, as a gust of air rushes beneath her.
According the the survey, the second most notable screen outfit is Dorothy’s famous Wizard of Oz ensemble—a blue gingham dress and ruby red slippers—followed by the tight black leggings and red shoes Olivia Newton John sported in Grease. And interestingly, all of the memorable outfits are accented by pops of red.
The survey was conducted as part of the foundation’s “Ramp Up The Red” campaign, which encourages individuals to wear red make-up, red clothing or throw a red party on Feb. 7 to raise awareness against coronary heart disease.
