Francis Bacon Triptych to Auction for $95 Million
An extremely valuable Francis Bacon triptych has entered the auction floor at Christie’s in New York with a record setting price tag of $95 million. The 1969 three-part work, “Three Studies of Lucian Freud” depicts Bacon’s friend Freud from three different angles sitting on a wooden chair with a yellow background.
The gold framed Triptych by Bacon is the most expensive piece of artwork in Christie’s postwar and contemporary collection going to auction on November 12th. The only other known full-length triptych by Bacon was sold in 2008 for $86.3 million at a Sotheby’s auction. The harsh angles and striking colors used coupled with the considerable size of Bacon’s triptych make it an eye catching and pleasing addition to any personal collection.
