Spike Lee Launches First Kickstarter Campaign

News | July 23, 2013

Spike Lee just launched an online Kickstarter campaign to finance his upcoming feature film about the addiction of blood. The Brooklyn director stated in his video message that the independent filmmaking climate requires him to “bring the money to the table.” According to his bid, Lee hopes to raise more than $1.5 million for his movie over the next month.

Spike Lee previously directed Do the Right ThingMalcolm X and will release Oldboy in October. For those who want to contribute the maximum of $10,000, the lucky donator’s reward is a trip with Lee and court side seats to a New York Knicks game.

“Do you wish to see Human Beings dealing with each other on a Human Level?” pleaded Lee. “How many more explosions with Ear splitting Sound Effects can you take? C’mon People, please get behind this Joint.”

Kickstarter campaigns have recently become very popular in Hollywood, launched by the likes of Zach Braff and Veronica Mars. The Veronica Mars movie raised $5.7 million on the fundraising website and Braff’s film reeled in $3.1 million.
