Standard Market (333 E Ogden in Westmont) has announced the launch of Pioneer, a Cabernet Sauvignon created in collaboration with the Barra family winery of Mendocino County, California. Available exclusively at Standard Market, Standard Market Grill and Bakersfield restaurant, this velvety blend (80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 5% old vine Petite Sirah) showcases flavors of sweet red fruits and cloves framed with spicy, sweet oak and a touch of vanilla.  The name “Pioneer” pays homage to winemaker and farmer Charlie Barra, a pioneer in the California wine industry, and also represents Standard Market, a pioneer in food retail and restaurants that source from within.

The Pioneer project is a perfect partnership for Standard Market and Charlie Barra’s winery. Standard Market is committed to making, finding and sourcing the best food and beverage from around the world. Meanwhile, the Barra family has been passionate about organically farming grapes for over six decades. Charlie Barra, now 86 years old, farms his organic vineyards with the goal of producing rich, distinguishable fruits that shine through in every glass.

In the conceptualization phase, the team at Standard Market asked customers what they would like to see in a wine. Based on the responses, they decided to create a delicious, fruit-forward Cabernet Sauvignon that works well on its own and with food, and is also a good value. With that goal in mind, the Barra family welcomed members of Standard Market’s team to their winery in Mendocino County, California, and they worked together to develop the Pioneer blend. Standard Market’s in-house designers created Pioneer’s branding and labeling.

In celebration of the Pioneer partnership, Standard Market and Bakersfield restaurant will hold tasting events to welcome this wonderful new wine. On Friday, July 26, Bakersfield (located across the street from Standard Market) will roll out the red carpet for a savvy soiree from 6:30 p.m.- 10 p.m. Paris Swing, a seven-piece swing band, will entertain guests as souvenir photos are taken and complimentary tastings of Pioneer are sampled. Full glasses will be available for $8 throughout the weekend (regularly $11) and bottles will be offered for $39.

The celebration will continue on Saturday, July 27, as Standard Market welcomes guests for a “Pioneer experience” with complimentary tastings, educational sessions and food pairings from 1 p.m. – 7 p.m. Samplings of Marketmade items will be showcased from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m., and The Butcher Shop will offer discounts on premium cuts of meat for pairing with Pioneer. A special, Pioneer-themed “What’s For Dinner Tonight?” will be available to-go for $39.99 (two petite filets, cabernet demi-glace, twice-baked potato, wedge salad and chocolate lava cakes), along with Bakersfield’s French Dip Sandwich Kit (herb-crusted hand-sliced beef tenderloin, garlic-buttered rolls, beef jus, horseradish cream and chips) for $19.99.  Standard Market loyalty cardholders will be entered in raffle to win a “Pioneer Wine and Cheese Class for Ten” ($750 value). Pioneer Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 will debut at Standard Market on July 24 through July 30 for $14.99 retail price ($19.99 after July 3).
